Erin Foster: The book provided a huge amount of information. A lot of it beyond my average brain. However, the author made a valiant effort of explaining the background, politics, science involved. What I take away from this book is just what the subtitle says: why COVID crushed us and what we need to do to prepare for the next pandemic.

Unaccountable: Changing the Healthcare Debate: I recently finished reading Dr. Scott Gottlieb’s book Uncontrolled Spread, which was an incredible deep dive into what was and is still happening with the U.S. government’s pandemic response. I believe Uncontrolled Spread will be the most authoritative book on the U.S. pandemic out of the many books that will be written.
From the beginning, Dr. Gottlieb has had an outlook on the COVID-19 pandemic that was both prophetic and personal. He carefully tracked the early spread of the coronavirus from it’s early days in Wuhan, China and then in Lombardy, Italy. Most of the country didn’t take the pandemic seriously at that point, but Gottlieb - who left his post as FDA commissioner in 2019 – sounded the alarm. In January, 2020, he warned that the outbreaks in other countries were previews of what would happen in the U.S. It’s one of many predictions Gottlieb got right when so many were wrong.
One of the first places in the U.S. hit hard was a hospital where he had trained as a medical resident--Elmhurst hospital in Queens, where refrigerator trucks lined up outside to receive some of the earliest Covid victims. He could personally feel the weight of the tragedy....

L. Heller: Scott Gottlieb is in a unique position to write a book that covers a broad spectrum of the mistakes that were made, early on in the pandemic. As a physician, former director of the FDA, and currently sitting on the Board of Directors for Pfizer, he has the ability to provide a broad perspective on a number of complex and critical issues related to our pandemic response. As previously mentioned in other reviews, he takes great care to avoid "blaming" Trump, or any of the other top officials such as Alex Azar, Robert Redfield, Dr. Fauci, preferring to focus on systemic failures, especially CDC. Particularly impressive is his chapter on improving national security, and how national security and public health agencies need to merge together to avoid another disaster. In this same chapter is an excellent outline of the various theories related to the origins of the virus, and he provides a good roadmap for future policy officials to follow. The sad conclusion, however, is we never will truly know how SARS-CoV2 originated unless the Chinese government had some miraculous change of heart. Having some background in medicine and science clearly makes this book enjoyable, but the layman...

Michael Griswold: Scott Gottlieb as the former commissioner of the FDA has both the voice and authority to speak on what it actually takes to battle a pandemic with his experiences with Sars and the Ebola outbreaks among others. In Uncontrolled Spread, Scott Gottlieb has written the book on the Covid 19 pandemic that the United States needed that digs deeper than just a tired rehashing of “The Trump Administration screwed up A, B, and C.” While this more than factors in, Gottlieb digs deeper describing the systemic failures that allowed the Covid 19 pandemic to get this bad and the (far fewer) bright spots that can give us some hope for the future.
Uncontrolled Spread is an education on the thought processes of public health and political leaders as well as vaccine development, geopolitics, and the problems of the supply chain in a crisis. Only by understanding the problems in these areas can we have any chance against the next global health emergency and Gottlieb lays them out in a way that even the reader with a non-existent or basic understanding of these areas can make sense of it.
Uncontrolled Spread is a book length conversation for the adults in the room who want to move...

Kevin from Chicago: Very fair, thoughtful, thorough and factual analysis of the pandemic. Probably the most plain spoken telling of what happened, and what needs to happen to avoid a repeat.
