Kindle Customer: I have read extensively about the Holocaust, but nothing as graphically expressed as Joe Rubinstein's story. I would recommend that everyone read it so that it can never happen again.

Christy O'Dell: Horribly sad story with a happy ending. What a brave human being.

NB: The narratives of Holocaust survivors leave such a deep impression. On one end it is difficult to imagine that humans are capable of inflicting such horrendous atrocities on fellow human beings - be it men, women or children. And at the other end, we learn about the extraordinary resilience of human character from individuals who managed to survive and emerge from unthinkable horrors and yet went on to live a full life seeking purpose, joy and love. Such books are a true reflection of the different shades of humanity.

CarolAnne Bills: Joe Rubinstein was a remarkable man. He shares his memories of his family in Radam, Poland so beautifully. I wish I had known them. From the depths of Nazi hell to his rebirth on American soil, Joe takes the reader on a very emotional ride. From the ashes of torture and deprivation to the riches of success in business and the blessings of a happy family, Joe's story is an inspiration. This was a beautifully written biography.

16takes: Everyone should read an Auschwitz’s survivor story. There are a few. I read The Choice before this one but this author was a prisoner for several years. This should’ve NEVER happened, but it did. To read a book like this for the purpose of overcoming atrocities is abhorrent. Few people have suffered this much and for so long. A better purpose for reading this book is to understand the depths of shear evil that exists in the hearts and minds of some people. Not just Hitler but all that did nothing and those that went along with Hitler’s madness. My biggest “takeaway” is to not ever let hatred for another take over me. To not be sucked into rhetoric. To see nothing and no one through generalities.

Lacey: This book tells of a whole series of events that is just one tragedy after another. He came away with his life but that was all. From being at the very bottom this courageous man pushed forward and helped others along the way. So very heartbreaking and very tough, at times, to keep reading but it's a part of our history that should never be forgotten. This man is a true survivor. One of the many people that were saved but there were many more that weren't. Everyone should read this book and take from it how precious life is and how easily it can be taken.

ws Whisper: I have read a fair few books about the plight of millions across Europe during the Nazis regime of WW2. Every persons voice is heart breaking, every tale an important history lesson and moral learning to us all in this modern age. There won't be many holocaust survivors left now, which makes every single book and account all the more important.
This survivors tale is gripping and emotionally overwhelming. My only complaint is that it has been 'romanticised' by the voice of the author and therefore isn't entirely genuinely the memoirs of the survivor until you reach her notes that she took directly from him.
I realise that she was charged to make a story from a man who often couldn't find the descriptive words to adequately explain the horrors he experienced, and that is apparent when you read his own words. But I still think she was given just a touch too much poetic licence and some of what she writes is from her own imagination and not from the gentleman himself. The description of his initial journey in the truck, is one such example. It goes way beyond anything he himself was able to convey.
None the less, we have a book which is beyond important, lest we...

Q's mom.: Shouldn't be rated at all. It is his story, his telling. What he remembers and chooses to share. It informs us and shames us...that anywhere in history such horrendous things went on.
We must read the memories of the survivors to be reminded. These stories are not for entertainment, they are for enlightenment.
That this strong man chose to share took an additional kind of strength.
Thank you Joe.
