Abbigail Holmes:
I like a lot the two main characters, Lily and Strangford. They may be cliche as socially marginalized (willingly or not) characters, but their dynamics and the way they treat each other possess some unique kind of warmth that made me feel quite cheezy while I was reading about their fears, their hopes, their pasts, their wishes that they both believe couldn't possibly come true.
The story is also intriguing because it questions not only people's reactions to those who are different but also points out the danger of eugenics and any similar theory (and practice).

I have to admit it took me awhile to start reading this - the cover image really didn't impress me very much - but once I started reading this I got hooked on the bizarre situation that Lily found herself in... But perhaps more important than the plot is Lily herself. She made a big impression on me. No way is she one of those cardboard characters you find in so many books. She's real. She has spunk and in 1914 she is riding a motorcycle when you first meet her - and she is speeding too! And she's brave enough to take a spill. She is very independent, doesn't want help from anyone (even if she needs it). But maybe the most important thing about her is how far she will go to protect her friends from harm. She is willing to do very risky, life threatening things - like sneak into places she doesn't actually belong to try and get information. It doesn't matter that she has no idea what she is doing. Yes, Lily is playing Detective without a badge and she is on the trail of a serial killer.
And this is part fantasy too. Lily and a few other characters in here are gifted with powers. Lily has visions that show her the future. And one such vision has showed her...

I agree with other reviewers that there are some "time" issues in this book as sometimes you think we are just pre WWI and other times the mannerism and customs make you think that we are 20-30 years earlier.
If you can let that go - then I found this book different and enjoyable. Cracks along at a nice pace until perhaps the final 10-15%. In that last stage, where you are wanting to know how it's going to all wrap up, the pace was slowed a bit by too much description of place and action.
This was where i started skim reading a bit. But, as entertainment goes, I enjoyed it.

I thought the book maybe a little childish from the cover but it’s not at all.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this novel, but I ended up enjoying it and wanting to follow the further adventures of many of its characters.
For those who don’t like to be scared, the book’s description makes it sound more dreadful than it is. It’s also not overly, descriptively gory, for those who shy from gore.
But that said, it definitely fulfills the Gothic horror vibe in a few ways. Notably, there were situations and scenes that almost felt like “musts” in any sort of book of this genre: sneaking into a graveyard at night; digging up a body; an abandoned mental hospital. Some of these definitely had their place in the story, but others felt like they were there because readers (and maybe even the author, who must be a fan of the genre) would want them there. In a weird way, it made me think of the John Wick movies, where sets exist for spectacular fight scenes, not necessarily plot. But this is a very, VERY minor thing about this book, because its length alone means that these few things I noticed are not what makes up the bulk of it.
All that to say, there are Gothic vibes and echoes of horror, but at the same time, what...

Alice Nelson: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I continued reading it after dinner, and all of a sudden it was quite late and I really needed to sleep! The storyline is quite plausible relative to world history, the actions and interactions of the characters true to the period of the setting, and (my favorite) it is a complete story of an adventure. Yet, I want to read more about each and every one of this wonderful company of talented people, . . .and so I shall!
