Helen M R: Helpful. Good advice even though it is for American colleges. Would recommend.

JT: I bought this book for my daughter as she preps to go to college. It is a very easy read and has solid advice. Some of the topics made me uncomfortable as our family tends to be on the conservative side. But as a father I can't protect her forever and this lays out some very frank conversations about sex, drugs, alcohol, etc. The author does a solid job of not promoting unsafe behavior, but telling kids how to protect themselves and how to be successful in college.

Jaime: This books is essentially a very good guide to the general issues you might encounter during college, YET there are few tips or practical guides.

Toxictoy: Bought this for my nephew for his high school graduation. He has gotten a kick out of the situations but it also gives him a perspective on situations that he never would have considered to be prepared for next year when he goes to college. Most people are mentally prepared for the educational aspect of going away to college but few really understand what they may be thrown into when they pair up with unknown people. It's well written and should be in every college student's library prior to their first day of college.

NBS: I bought this book 4 years ago to read prior to my daughter going to college. It's amazing! Addresses all (and I mean ALL) aspects of college life whether the kid goes away to school or commutes. The author does so with a sense of humor... it's a very easy read! While my daughter blew off reading the book, I was able to be a bit more "proactive" in counseling her through some of her freshman college adjustment issues given what I read. Since then, I have lent the book out to a couple of kids going to college (both ended up buying the book to keep as a resource). This year my younger daughter graduated from high school and is heading off to college on the other side of the country. I purchased 8 of these books to give as graduation gifts (along with a card and check, of course!) for her friends... and again, if the kid isn't reading it, the parent is. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book. Ideally read it the year prior to their attending college but reading it as they take off is still quite helpful.

Tom: I'm currently a Sophmore in college and I thought I'd pick this up for some winter break reading.
Maybe my opinion is biased since I am already in college, but I found that most of his tips were just common sense. Don't drink too much, don't party too much, use protection, don't neglect your studies... Some of this stuff seems more like filler content than stuff that someone would actually find new and useful.
Still some of the stuff was, nevertheless, useful and stuff I wish someone had told me before I went to college. Stuff like joining clubs and making friends. Read up to chapter 8. Skim the rest of the book if you want.

A Starnes: This book is perfect for parents before they send their kids off to college as freshmen. I loved the variety of topics that are covered and the depth that they are presented in. Harlan Cohen is a great writer, very easy to read and lots of quotes from both students and adults that live the college life. It was a great starting point for some very frank discussions with our rising freshman.
