William L. Scurrah: This is a beautifully bound and boxed edition, with fine paper and clear print. Of the many translations of Homer that I've read and/or sampled, from Chapman to contemporary experimental adaptations, this is the best--smooth, elegant, and clear. Can't recommend highly enough. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.

Mark Wallman: There's whole pages of who is who which is just as yawn-worthy as all the "begats" in the bible, but if you can wade through that the actual story is obviously a classic and gives significantly interesting insight into the times when it was written.
There are a number of sentences with typos / problematic wording throughout, so perhaps not the greatest translation and / or editing, but I haven't read any others to compare it to so I don't know that the problem is uniquely with this edition.

Manuel Del Rio RodriguezManuel Del Rio Rodriguez: Nothing to add to contents or translation of this edition, which are superb. Alas, University of California Press have decided to use a glued (!?) binding for it, which makes no sense whatsoever and detracts notoriously from the reading experience. You can't have 'deluxe' and 'glued' binding, people!

William P. Flynn: New to me but what drew me to this one is that it was by Peter Green.
Now Peter Green was the original guitar player for Fleetwood Mac, but who knew he was a classics scholar as well?
Sadly, it turns out this is not the same Peter Green, and I don’t know if he actually even plays guitar, but his translation is interesting and worth a look.
I have read almost every translation of the Iliad since Lattimore (Graves, Fitzgerald, Fagles, Lombardo, Mitchell, and Caroline Alexander) and Peter Green’s is right up there.
Spoiler, the Trojan Horse and Brad Pitt do not make an appearance in this translation, any more than they did in the previous ones.
Forewarned is Forearmed.

William B. Hafen: This review is of the 2 book Hardback boxed set of the Iliad and the Odyssey (Homer) translated by Peter Green (ISBN-13 : 978-0520306653). Reviews made before actually reading a book are usually of little value to me (and who am I to review Homer?). I guess Peter Green's translation could be reviewed but I lack sufficient depth in ancient Greek to make a meaningful contribution and others have commented on that aspect. However the physical aspects of this edition can be reviewed immediately. The set is beautiful. The slip case is sturdy and attractive repeating design elements on the book's dust jackets. The books are well bound (not glued as some hardbacks are now) and of just the right size for reading. I also like the fact that the slip case is wide enough to fit the books even with protective covers on the dust jackets. I own other editions but this is the showpiece English Homer in my library and I recommend it to be considered for yours.

AliceAlice: I am someone who shop for beautiful, collector or deluxe edition. When I shopped this item I thought there wasn't enough pictures and reviews about the look of the book. In my opinion, when it's hardcover and more expensive editions it would be better to have more comments or more descriptions of the look of the book(s). So here are the pictures that I would have like to have when I was shopping for the «deluxe» edition of those classics of Homer. I was really curious about the writing style and arrangement of the text. I didn't want to take a too clear photo of the text to not be accused of anything so sorry for the bad quality, but at least you can see the form of the police and typeface, it's always a big worry when I shop online but, for this one, even thought the typeface is small, it seems nice to read. The pages consistency is fun (thick but not too much and the texture of the paper is nice to touch), also I think for those who like to take notes in their book or highlight nice passages it's a good paper to do it.
