Biggles: As the spouse of someone with CKD, this book is a godsend. It's hard to know where to turn when you first suspect a problem and I really appreciate the helpful advice/information given. Because of our location, there is a bit of a problem with getting follow-up information from the doctors, so having something that helps us know the steps is much needed. I highly recommend this book. It's informative without being boring or trying to impress you with the pandering to us lesser beings that some medical books like to do. This is written in clear, concise language without ever getting boring. If there were an "official" list of books that one should read when CDK rears its ugly head, this would have to be at the top of the list.

Rearden Steele: As a kidney disease patient I found the recommendations in this book to be inconsistent with my experience. examples:
Animal proteins particularly red meat consumption is mentioned with no caveat on page 42 simply because fresh beef is a low protein source. However the literature cites a srrong case against the consumption of red meat by kidney patients.
Stinging nettle tea is mentioned as an avoid herb. Yet it is one of the highly recommended treatments for use on a daily basis. Nettle (Urtica dioica) is
• Anti-anemic
• Astringent
• Diuretic
• Lowers blood sugar
• Nutritive
• Stops bleeding
All of these characteristics are useful to kidney patients.
Another avoid herb according to the book is Astragalus.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) has been used for thousands of years with the following charistics
• It is a Kidney tonic
• Balances immune system
• Immune enhancer
• Cardiovascular strengthener

Ann Smith: It explains how the kidneys function in simple terms. I would have liked more recipes but they are easy to find online and having read the book gave me something to go by.

Mrs. Hammond: The author writes honestly and has a straightforward style. But kidney patients have the food product manufacturers against them because there is never a mention on packages, cans, bottles etc how much potassium etc is present in their products. And it is often life-saving information for patients with poorly functioning kidneys. Their diet is more complicated than diabetics.

Tina the S.: YES. A REAL doctor who actually explains WHY certain foods MUST be avoided by people with kidney disease, and explains the stages of the illness. Gives GOOD suggestions for eating foods which will NOT kill you. Kidney disease patients MUST eat low calcium, low potassium, low phosphorous foods. The ONLY book on renal dieting which I would recommend. The rest of the books seem to be written by charlatans or sadists. THIS book offers up websites for REAL information as well as explains WHY some foods can kill you, while others are OK. People with CKD must avoid so Many Foods, that a book with foods which they can eat and menus which won't kill them is ESSENTIL+AL. The BEST book on the subject to date! ONLY good foods for people with CKD are included in suggested menus.

Pamela Crawford: This is by far the most complete Kidney diet book I have found and I have purchased a lot of books on the subject. It has the dietary exchanges for a diabetic diet as well as showing you what you can and can not eat with kidney disease. It lists the foods to avoid as well as ones you should have limited exposure to and explains the phases of kidney disease and how to slow down or help to reverse kidney disease. It has brought my husband from stage 5 kidney disease to stage 2. He is still healing but without this guide we would have had the wrong diet and done more damage. His kidney Dr. has been astonished at how quickly he has improved.
