slodancr: Her experiences enveloped many years and many personalities. She would describe some of the reasons she was traumatized, and then stop short of talking about her feelings. As a nurse, it would’ve been helpful to hear her feelings a bit more and how she tried to recover from her trauma.

christene landry: I gave this as a gift for Christmas. My sister had read the other stories written by the author but not the book about herself. She said she couldn't put it down.

Centsible: Mrs. Macleod wrote two books about her life as a nurse on a Scottish island. She was married with children. It was a busy life and a challenging experience adjusting to the culture, language, and geography. Her latest book focuses on her early life, family dynamics, WW 2, and her nursing school years. A very interesting series. I highly recommend it.

Kathleen EB Harrison's review.: I enjoyed reading this book. I like a lot of medical knowledge. I like the fact this is a true story, as it brings a familiarity to the girl/women. It was scary during the war bombing. I was sorry when it ended, only because I wanted more, which is a good thing, to honour the writer. It is good to know that our girl/women did well with her life. I am happy for all of her accomplishments in her life.

Kindle Customer Diana Perkinsi: I was very sad how this girl was raised and how she was mentally abused or maybe emotionally abused and deprived. So very surprised that she had so much personal strength to keep on going. Everything see
Ed so totally against her. EspeciAlly her Mum I think her dad was just ignorant what love and support children need. Things have continued to change ideas of all the support emotionally children need. Im slightly younger about8 years and I realize how much has changed even in the last 60 years. But her upbringing was even extreme for that age
I loved the nursing stories Mary really is an amazing woman

Amazon Customer: When Mary's mother died at Mary's age of 5 years, her life was full of sadness when her father remarries so soon after. His new wife is very unkind to Mary, insisting her name should be changed to Julie and her father goes along. Mary seems to accept these changes just thinking that's the way it was. In spite of all the negative moments in her young life she was able to "get past it" and turn her focus to becoming a nurse and it allowed her to bloom. I enjoyed seeing the achievements she was finally able to make when she was in charge of her life.

Jan Butterfield: I loved this book. The author shared her memories of her childhood, both before her mother died in childbirth when Mary was 5 years old, and after, when she was raised by a malicious step-mother and a hands-off father. Fascinating detail about life in a small English village during the war and then we follow her as she embarks on a nursing career. Quite poignant, and yet she never comes across as feeling sorry for herself (although she well might have!) for the way the adults in her life mostly failed her. I’d read her later books, and was very pleased to learn about her beginnings.
