Rhonda: The artwork is beautiful, like having the Met Museum in your living room, and the captions are hilarious. More than a coffee table book. This is a small potent book which will be handed from woman to woman and mother to daughter.

Branden: Hand this book to a dude. If there’s only silence or comments such as, “Well, sometimes…”, take back the book and run… run far away. If he laughs, maybe give him a chance. Remaining skeptical is still warranted.

Ellen Richter: But it made me laugh. Because it's true!
I think it would be better if the info about each painting were on the bottom of the page, instead of in the back.

P. Salus: Accurate, funny, pointed, ... Lest my wife and daughter eviscerate me, I will refrain from mansplaining why this is a funny book. And, oh, did I mention it's funny? Let me explain why ...

Scribbler D.: The author has created a work which very accurately reflects the experience of almost any woman (if you don't believe this - ask any woman you know) and her use of older artworks to illustrate the attitudes described is just priceless. A funny, ironic and brilliant work of genius. To brighten my day I open a page and chuckle.

bookish: This book will make you laugh out loud in recognition — either because you’ve heard these “helpful” comments a thousand times or because you are dumb enough to deliver them. The juxtaposition of the timely text with the old paintings somehow fits perfectly, and the dulled expressions of the painted women really just underscore the modern reality of how annoying these types of men can be.
The paintings themselves are mostly beautiful, and so in addition to reliving our current state of gender politics, you can also enjoy some nice art. One thing that struck me is that in all of these old paintings, the (male) artists appear to be to some degree forthright about the miserable status of women. None of the women appear happy, most of them look annoyed, and all of them seem to exhibit a measure of seriousness. When you compare this to commercial imagery of women today — where women are scantily clad, sexually submissive, and inexplicably ecstatic to be both — an argument can be made that the popular depiction of women has actually devolved (or at least not evolved) from centuries ago. Congratulations, everyone! Yet more proof that this book is needed now more than...

Kim Swain: Just looking at their facial expressions makes you believe that the men actually said that. I was highly amused with this book.
