What did I like? I have to admit that there's a certain amount of cyberpunk vibes from a tool with an old fashioned purpose in a sleek, modern style.
What do I dislike? The bearings aren't really necessary.
In actual fire by friction sets like my original home made unit, the blunt end is supposed to go into the firebird and the point into the thunderbird.
The thong on real ones is made of twisted leather and the spindle is octagonal 🛑 to give it better grip.
The blunt end in the firebird gives more friction and therefore heats up faster.

Derek G: Within minutes, my son and I were making bow drill fires in our back yard. If you want to learn the basics, this is a great kit. It won't last long, but is very easy to use.

Jacob: It is a good tool for practicing a skill. Works well for me. I did burn through the board before I got a good amber. It is a quick and easy tool to use.

toomanytoysforagrownup:
I have been wanting to start a fire with the "Rubbing sticks together" method since I was a small boy. I have tried many, many, many times.
I thought if I bought a "kit" that at least I would know that I have the needed supplies to make it happen.
Last weekend I received the kit and gave it a try. I immediately got smoke and took that as a very good sign. I tried for the remainder of the weekend about six to eight more times. I got plenty of smoke but no ember that I knew of. (I did create an ember but not big enough) I was a quite disappointed.
I read a few more blogs on the subject and watched another video or two. The advice that stuck out was that you have to go until your arm is aching and you just can't go any longer. Then you must go another ten seconds or more.
You must get and keep an idea in your head. You are creating wood "dust" that needs to fill the "slot" in the hearth board and that is where your ember needs to start. I saw a woman make a fire and she said after she got a pile of dust in the "slot" that was smoking a bit she just left it for a a full 60 seconds. I did the same and waved my hand very gently near the wood...
