Carleigh LoshusanCarleigh Loshusan: I saw the movie a few years ago and loved it. I’ve been wanting to find Susana Kaysen’s; Girl, Interrupted book for a while now, but could never find it in hardcover.
I finally ordered it and it is in near perfect condition. No writing or bent pages, it’s clear that it has never been read.
As someone who struggles with Mental Health, this book is really enjoyable to read. It is so well written and once I started reading, I couldn’t stop. I don’t read a lot, and this book is easily one I can see myself reading over and over.
It’s not a long book, around 165 pages, which surprised me because I thought it would be a bigger book. It’s fine though, the story is great.
If you are looking for a book explaining what it is like living and struggling with Mental Illness and being psychiatrically hospitalized, this is a great book that will give you great insight into Susana Kaysen’s journey.
10/10 recommend! (Especially if you are looking for the hardcover version)

aarinaarin: The book arrived very fast but unfortunately came with the back portion of the book bent back and won’t go back into place. I have it sitting under something heavy now hoping it will bend back but it still has some damage to it regardless

chloe orme: Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted is an extremely effective memoir. Not only does it fit the definition and criteria for a good memoir; it also teaches a valuable lesson and actively destigmatized aspects of mental illness. I was interested in reading this memoir as having been admitted to a psychiatric facility myself, I have always taken an interest in how it was when stigmas were heavy, and information was scarce. By criteria Girl, Interrupted is an effective memoir, and the novel is very progressive for it’s time.
Girl interrupted is a memoir of self discovery. It’s theme being loss and regaining of identity. Throughout the memoir Kaysen is constantly learning about herself, and learning to accept herself. This is displayed when she speaks about her diagnosis. “I didn't read them until 25 years later, a character disorder is what they had told me” (kaysen, 150). Kaysen did not know much about her diagnosis until 25 years later as she mentioned. In this chapter she speaks about borderline personality disorder and speaks on how the symptoms are applicable to her experiences. This represents self discovery as not only does she understand her diagnosis, but she also...

ELIZABETH: Introduction
Girl, Interrupted, by Susanna Kaysen, is a riveting memoir about mental illness which will have you questioning your own mental state. Kaysen was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is an American author with several books under her belt spanning from fiction to memoirs. Kaysen has written a total of five books with Girl, Interrupted being the best selling and rightfully so. Kaysen bares all and portrays how her life was interrupted by her self-commitment to a psychiatric hospital at age 19. Kaysen commits herself after a short visit with a psychologist she had not seen in the past unaware of her rights to do otherwise. The story is told in a manner in which time is not linear and characters are revealed as they pertain to Kaysen’s agenda, which exposes various mental illnesses and minimally focuses on her own. Kaysen’s frank description of insanity and life at McLean Hospital will leave you identifying with the narrator and the people she encounters during her 18 month stay.
