D. Reisen: We have a son that is an addict. We have attended many alanon meetings and work hard to know that the path our son has chosen is not the path we chose for him and that we need to choose our own path. Letting go of someone you love so very much and have so many hopes and dreams for is very hard. We like that this book showed both sides of this horrible and many times hopeless path.

marilyn m.: The item was delivered fast and was in perfect condition. More importantly, the book itself is a great guide for anyone needing some more information about addiction, what you can do about it, what you can't do, and how to cope with what you can't help.

AMS: I have a mother who is addicted to prescription medication. She has been on it for 15 years due to nerve damage, and recently she was told it's time to get off of it due to other health problems her dependency is causing.
I found it easy to blame her physicians for getting her addicted to these prescriptions for almost 12 years, but I've always known it was a dangerous downward spiral with her life and relationships. Her mood swings, drowsiness, forgetfulness, manipulation, lying and ridiculous behavior has been so out of control, I am truly convinced she is in fact an addict [Even though she'll tell you she's just "dependent"], even though it took me this long to realize it. I feel so foolish for not realizing it sooner. For so long, I have been in denial that she was just "dependent" and found blame in others for her actions and words. I recently started therapy to learn how to deal with her and her actions, but really I needed it for myself, to learn how to forgive, heal, and not let her addiction take over my life.
My therapist had suggested researching addiction and reading other peoples' personal stories. "An Addict in the Family" by Beverly Conyers details...

Barbara S. Reeves: If you have a family member or loved one who is addicted to drugs or alcohol, and you don't know what to do about it, then you should definitely read "Addict in the Family: Stories of Loss, Hope, and Recovery" by Beverly Conyers. You may ask yourself: Did I cause the addiction? How could I have been so blind? Is there any hope? How can I help him/her get well? Is it possible to find peace of mind? Family members of addicts have very few choices to make and all too often it's the wrong ones. "Addict in the Family" can help you make the right choices.
Families are the hidden victims of addiction, and they endure much mental anguish, guilt, and shame. Much of the suffering is rooted in the false belief that the addict has only himself to blame and that he could cure himself if he really wanted to. Despite all the begging, pleading, threatening, reasoning, and bribing the family members do, the addict will usually persist in his destruction.
There are several informative chapters about the nature of addiction that includes tips on how to recognize the addict's chief tools: denial, dishonesty, and manipulation. These tools allow the addict to get drugs, continue using...

PB: I can’t say enough good things about this book. It covers every aspect of addiction and how it affects the family. It walks you through the steps of addiction one by one and gives realistic hope that the addict can recover and family members can set boundaries, detach from the addict with love, and learn how to enjoy life again. By far the best book I’ve read on the subject.
