Green girl 87: This is one of 5 sun sun canister filters I own. I have a 603, two 302, and two 404. They all work great and at a fraction of the price you'd pay for a name brand of similar size.

Now, there are some small things you need to know. Like the pump for the 603 is tiny and made for a sitting level with a small tank. Or that you should put a silicone lube on the seals of any canister filter to prevent leaking. Or that literally any canister filter can have air bubbles trapped in it, making it noisy until you get them out. The media most canisters come with isn't great, and the way they tell you to use it isn't ideal. Seriously, every brand of canister filter. But if you know these things about canister filters in general, and use these sun sun filters correctly, they really are quite good.

This model(404) in particular has a small flaw that you can't fix persay, but it isn't a big deal. The prime button was made smaller to accommodate for a handle. The handle is a nice addition from previous models, but the primer button is not. Mine just doesn't work. But having another that does work, I can tell you it isn't the best anyway. And frankly, you don't need...

Carrie Perez: Ok, so my first unit died within 30 days, and while I was hesitant to do so, I replaced it through Amazon. Of course Amazon is great, and the replacement was in my home in a couple of days. I ran the new unit for about 5 months and during regular maintenance, the unit's cover would simply not go back on properly. I checked everything (I'm pretty handy too) and was not able to make it fit. At one point, I thought I had it, but it turns out that it still had a very small trickle leak, and needless to say that overnight it was an absolute disaster! About 8 gallons of water was everywhere! It was a MESS - all over my hardwood flooring too. While it did work, it did work well, but 2 units in 6 months is completely unacceptable. Although, while the bulbs for the anti-algae were always illuminated, I had some serious issues with algae - so I guess that part never really worked. I have my tank away from direct sunlight too - so this should not have happened. I went with a Fluval FX4 that I just finished installing. I have absolutely no experience with Fluval, but from everything that I've read, they seem to be the best - they better be as the price of that...

D.B.: First of all, I dislike reading reviews by people who have barely removed the item from the box, and who claim that the product "looks like it should last a long time." Of course, that is nonsense. At the same time, I can offer a few observations that might help you to make a decision on your purchase. So, here goes.
This is not some cheap knock-off of the AquaTop CF 500 UV filter. They are both made in the same factory, by the same workers. One difference is the design of the top of the unit. Meaningless really. The salient difference is the price: $123.77 for the AquaTop versus $68.99 for the Sunsun, at the time of this writing. That by itself made the decision for me. The plastic on the main housing is thick and has a solid feel, as are the hoses and intake and outlet devices. The set-up is easy, especially if you have assembled a canister filter before. There are four easy to remove trays. This is one of the big reasons that I considered this unit. My other tank has an Eheim filter. Very robust, reliable, and expensive. And the cleaning process is a mess. No trays. So you wind up scooping the media and detritus out of the unit every time...
