Tracy: I bought this for my daughter to use at college. We live in SW Florida so it rains daily certain times of the year. This umbrella has a long handle that can offer a bit of thig deterent in my opinion also. The large canopy means if she is walking solo all of her is completely covered. There is enough room for a friend to walk with her. (Maybe even two friends.)

HOWEVER, in FL, i do feel like gusts coukd turn it inside out.
