Mr D: As others have mentioned, it's about 0.5° out. It's not the end of the world and once you're aware of this you can compensate before cutting - but you shouldn't have to. A good make like Starrett should be exact, being made in China shouldn't have anything to do with accuracy - I have a few China made tools and they are all ok. For £12 it's not bad, just not as good as it should be.. .

alan: it’s a good little tool, perhaps a little hard to read for older eyes but it’s also a good size for getting into small corners when fitting skirting. if you want an accurate definitive number maybe get a digital one but if you want a quick angle this is great. i also like that it gives you the angle you need on your chop saw.

i used it for 3 years, doing lots of 2nd fix carpentry and it found a regular place in the tool belt. it’s not too big either. eventually the scale started getting worn and harder to read and yesterday it stopped working and i opened it up and the alignment tabs on the inside had broken off.

i have ordered the aluminium version although that one is £50. i think £25 for 3 years of solid work isn’t too bad value really

Gil Berger: Like so many others, I was looking for a way to measure abnormal/inaccurate inside/outside angles. In the past, the way I've always made miter cuts on inaccurate angles is as follows:

(A) Find the angle profile with an angle finder. An angle finder is a very simple device that operates sort of like a pocket knife. You loosen a tightening knob to release a sliding blade from it's pivoted handle, position the blade and handle to your angel and re tighten the knob so that you have a portable profile of the angle you are measuring.

(B) Take the angle finder to your compound miter saw and place the handle along the fence and position the saw blade (not the teeth) against the blade edge of the angle finder.

(C) Take the degree measurement that the saw reads and bisect it to find your miter cut measurement.

This can be a long and tedious trial & error process. I thought maybe there was a better way. I started looking through Youtube to see if anyone had any good suggestions and I came across a guy that raved about this product. MattMatt: There are likely quite a few fakes in circulation from Amazon and elsewhere. I ordered one from a third-party seller with fulfillment by Amazon, but upon close inspection after receiving the item, it turned out to be a fake. I purchased a second that was actually "sold by" - not just "fulfilled by" - Amazon and from inspection I'm sure it is genuine.

Please see my photos with the details. The fake was very close in almost every way. Without a real one next to it, it was a challenge to identify. If I had bought it as an off-brand out of a bargain bin, I probably wouldn't have had any complaints. It still looked pretty functional. I wanted the real tool for this though; I just couldn't get past the concern that I would end up with less precise finished miters and/or more rework with the fake. The fake I got appeared to be pretty close on accuracy though.

Differences:
Laser Engraving- Real has true laser-etched dial with consistent alignment of markings and numbers. The laser actually "digs" tiny trenches with a little roughness at the edges of each engraved "trench". Feels a little like sandpaper when sliding finger across markings.
