Steve P: Easy to use and functional I want to know if the circuit is off. I always test on a live outlet first then normally the line I want to be sure of.

Engineer's OpinionEngineer's Opinion: USELESS! This tester will give a false alarm when testing almost anything. Here is a picture of it giving an alarm when touching the cardboard packaging it came in! (the cardboard is on a rubber coaster on a wooden table nowhere near a power source) Read the one star reviews - the complaints are true. If it is anywhere within 8-10 inches of a hot wire, it will alarm. It could not test neutral or ground on an outlet with the power on, it always alarms. I only give it 5 stars because it is ultra-safe - it will always indicate there is live voltage. In fact, I showed my wife that it alarms on the garbage can, so it wasn't safe for me to take it out. She took it and touched the stove top, and it alarmed, so she said it wasn't safe to cook dinner. ( I'll be taking her out to Red Lobster right after I finish this review!)

C. Keys: I bought this after finishing a small electrical project in our attic.
In order to be very safe, I turned off power to over half of our house before I clipped a wire. I probably spent 30-45 minutes going back and forth from the breaker box to the attic and second guessing myself before I did make a cut. And thankfully I did because the breaker switch for that wire was not the "Attic" one, but another that was merely running through the attic.
That Monday, a coworker told me about non-contact voltage detectors and although my project was done, I ordered one for the next one that will surely show up.
This device works wonderfully. Throw in a battery, turn it on and put it against any wire and it will light up and beep to let you know it's hot. It's that simple. No secondary device, just this one, the size of a marker and just touch it to a wire.
Do yourself and your loved ones a favor and order one to be safe and sure around electricity.
