Donald L Baker: In general, the Southwire 40116N non-contact voltage tester is a great product. However, they have changed the method of accessing the batteries. With previous versions of Southwire non-contact voltage testers you had to unscrew the end to access the batteries. With this version the instructions say to depress an area of the clip and pull it apart to access the battery compartment. That is easier said than done. I had to use a jeweler's screw driver to force the clip down and then pull it apart. After doing that a few times I was finally able to do it as illustrated in the instructions. Most people know how to use a non-contact voltage tester and don't keep the instructions. I had to download the instructions to figure out how to change the batteries.

Also, I don't like how the flashlight power button functions. You have to depress and hold to keep the light on. You can't depress and release to turn it on or off. This makes it somewhat inconvenient to use the flashlight.

DinAZDinAZ: So the first one I got did not work for the low voltage. No yellow LED and it did not detect anything properly. I used in normal 110 mode and placed near my USB end of a cord and it beeped. I put it in 12 v mode and it beeped. Or maybe it was never in 12 v mode. Amazon replaced that one.

The next one I get, I open the batter cover, nearly needed pliers to open this one, and it seemed awfully shallow area for the 2 batteries to fit in. I checked since it was so hard to get the end cap off. I slide in the first battery and it did not want to slide down all the way. There should be room for 2 AA batteries and one was not going in. I took that out and it seemed there was something inside. I tapped, shook and finally had to swing hard for it to come out. The pic here shows a very dented battery that is green and silver. The el'cheapos that come with are a brownish color. The packaging had not been opened, so this came from the manufacturer this way.

After getting this one out, I put in the two batteries with no issues. I tested 110 more and it worked as expected. I put it in 12 v mode and it I got the yellow LED, but it did not defect USD 5 volt power. Not sure if this...

Falcon5000: I've used tons of voltage sniffers at work everything from fluke to you name it, this brand South wire is the best that I have seen so far and the most durable. I have three of them around the house at work etc. I hope they do not stop making these every once in awhile I will break one when it falls out of my pocket and goes to concrete five stories down and I have to get a new one so hopefully they will continue to make these I put my life on the line with this tester and it is not let me down.

David: I’ve been using this tester for over 5 years now. I’m on my 3rd one. First one eventually broke and second one was lost. This was one of the first static testers that didn’t immediately fall apart after dropping it from waist height. The IP67 rating was rare to find in the old days now every tester over $30 has it, and it should considering how often they are dropped and tossed around. There are definitely “better” testers and cheaper one for sure. But south wire has hit the perfect balance with this one.
Important note: flashlight drains battery like crazy and will cause the tester to turn off if battery is too low. I only use lithium battery with static testers because I find low voltage batteries can cause testers to give false readings, especially in the cold
Wish the 12V button didn’t have to be held to test low voltage lines

krisztian ujfalusi: With the Fluke 1AC II VoltAlert, you can see which conductor is live, Southwire is a bit too sensitive... Other than that is a good little gadget.
