Amazon Customer: 2.5 stars. Bought this two years ago and the lid has broken on it from wear and tear. Never been dropped. Always handled very gently.

The mechanisms that lock in the lid and allow the main button to work (for safety) are made of plastic and have both broken off. A couple months ago it was just one side and the lid could still activate the button with only one. But this morning the other broke off when I unscrewed the lid for my second cup of coffee.

I had a used Krups grinder I got from Goodwill before this and that thing lasted me ten years before it went kaput.

Disappointed in the lifespan of this one.

I'm going to contact them and see if they respond to rectify this. That'll really be the test of the company.

Edited: Amended review (4 stars)
Contacted company and they offered to replace the lid which I appreciate very much and will consider when I purchase Secura houseware products again.

Elissa Nelson: I bought this product for my work, which clearly voids the warranty. A co-worker shattered the lid, and bought a regular coffee grinder to replace it. I tried to grind a combination of lovage root slices and large elecampane chunks, holding the lid shut with packing tape: still ground them pretty fast. Very good grinder, and large capacity. Buying another. When I told the sellers the lid had been damaged, they sent me a new one, even though the breaking couldn't have been their fault. I can't recommend this grinder enough.

UPDATE FROM SEVERAL MONTHS LATER: I continue to be super-impressed with this grinder. My work involves the grinding of lots of non-culinary herbs, some of which are extremely woody and would break (have broken) most coffee grinders immediately. The Secura breaks them down with no problem (except sometimes a big chunk getting stuck under a blade, which is easily remedied). I bought this grinder as a holiday present for the whole business, and it's June now, and the only problem we've had was when that lid broke.

Our last grinder had its lid broken just by hard herbs within a month, and within two months, the start button had somehow been destroyed...

Steve Dine: I've recently started smoking meat where spices in dry rubs are a huge part of smoking. I started out with a hand grinder and the amount of spices that you need to grind to make a dry rub was a huge burden. Therefore, it only took me one time to realize that I should have got an electric grinder like this one for around the same price; live and learn. Prior to grinding my own spices, I was buying them pre-ground and was losing a lot of flavor. When I say a lot, that is an under estimate. If you smoke meat then you need one of these to crush your spices to a fine powder. The instructions on this grinder says that it works well on dry spices: peppercorns, coriander, allspice, celery seed, mustard seed.True that!

I broke this baby in last night and pulsed ground the spices one at a time to obtain a course grind. I then combined all the spices together and they filled the grinder about half way. The hopper looks like it will hold around one cup total. I then went with 5 second grinds allowing the motor to cool for 10-15 seconds between grinds. This gave me a fine grind that was perfect for my dry rub. The task of grinding spices went from 90 minutes down to 10 min from one week...

Jason: So after reading in the product description that it grinds cinnamon specifically, I decided to buy this grinder (my Magic Bullet was scaring me everytime I tried to grind cinnamon sticks). I understood when buying that it would be difficult to clean because the grinder part is not removable and therefore washable. Didn't realize it would be this difficult though. It's quite deep, so you have to reach in there with a cloth to wipe away stuff. Shouldn't be a problem if you only use it to grind ONE spice or just coffee, but if you're grinding multiple spices like myself you may always have some residual spice mixing. The plastic lid is also difficult to cleans (tons of grooves). Also, you can only do one or two cinnamon sticks at a time, otherwise it gets stuck.

Would NOT recommend it as a multi-spice grinder, only use it as a coffee grinder or a specific spice grinder.

EDIT: Grinder died after around 4th or 5th time grinding cinnamon sticks...

GS: I am an avid cook, and I purchased this as a spice grinder. In the past I have owned the excellent Krups 203-42 Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder, however at the time of this purchase the Secure was a prettier and less expensive bargain.

Overall I like the product, I have used my Secura twice, and so far and it has done very good job.

Pros:
Attractive industrial design, with a nice stainless steel finish.

Twist lock top, ensures spices stay in the container.

Simple one touch operation.

Generally good reviews on Amazon.

Cons:
Center of the blade has a white plastic top, which can become infused with the oils/scent of past uses and contaminate new grindings. Note, to be fair most grinders, like the Krups 203-42, have the same issue.

Plastic top can build up a static charge, spices will cling to it. Again to be fair, this issue plagues most grinders.

Harder to empty, bowl is round and the top shallow. Unlike the oval shaped Krups you cannot invert the contents into the top for easier pouring into another container.

Final Thoughts:
Based on my current experience I would recommend this to a friend. However, given...
