- I’ve purchased it because product title said “Large ferro rod” and it turned out to be a disappointment in the size and weight race
- product is tiny, thinner than other similar products of same price range
- rod weight only 17g opposed to the 43g of the hexa rod I’ve found on Amazon in same price range
- striker sturdy, but small, prints are missing
- will work just OK, so it’ll fulfill it’s purpose
- overall low value / price ratio compared to other similar products sold on Amazon in the same price range (+/- 1-2 USD)
- useful for people though who are looking for lightweight products to reduce hiking bulk weight

Product name said “Large ferro rod” which is false advertising as this thing is very thin, it only has the same length as similar low priced products, but it does not have the same width. Lack of thickness amounts to lack of actual material, resulting in lack of value for the same cost.

AndersonAnderson: The media could not be loaded.  I like this hero rod because it’s easy to strike, and I can light a cotton ball in one strike. It is an awesome product. My favorite thing about it is that it makes very large sparks.

Ours is a little different than the one pictured: there’s a handle on the striker but not on the rod. Still works great though.

Isabel L.: Find one with a longer ferro rod instead. This item is 4 inches long including the handle! And the rod itself that creates the spark is just too short. it. The longer rods will produce more sparks with just one strike (or two). With this short rod, you may have to work harder by striking it too many times, especially if you do not have any bushcraft skills. Although I was able to light up a piece of lint easily (just one strike) that I have collected from the dryer, cotton balls will do as well. I tried other materials to use as tinder but you may have to work harder.

John Black: I bought this little ferro rod and striker simply to help me get free shipping on an item I needed. When I received it several days later I was genuinely surprised at how effective it was compared to several larger ferro rods I normally use. I can throw a cascade of sparks with this little jewel as easily as with my larger rods and the solid eighth inch thick steel striker is one of the best I have ever used. The small size of this little rod is nothing but an asset you can count on. I highly recommend this striker to anyone who knows how to use one or is willing to learn. JB.

Update : so used it in the bush and worked really good. Some people are saying the Stryker that it comes with doesnt work but it worked on the second strike with some birch bark.

Over all its small but really good quality and will be a part of my fire stater kit for a while.

The Only RDs: No question this is a Ferro Rod. Nice and compact. However, as has been mentioned elsewhere there are a few issues with the product.

1) The striker is inadequate. Part of the problem is the short string, but some of it is the surface itself. Much better to use a camping knife. Unfortunately, that eliminates some of the convenience of the item.

2) The rod is short which mimized the "sparkage" [should i trademark that term? :)] Also be aware that with mine at least I had to strike a few times to get through a coating around it.

I've used it a number of times, haven't had issues with the rod becoming dislodged from the holder.

Former Pro Armchair QuarterbackFormer Pro Armchair Quarterback: Good ferro rod - likely hard ferrocerium (sparks a bit less than soft, but lasts longer as a result and is much cheaper for some reason) . Includes a better striker than most rods come with. I like to keep a 3/8" rod with each of my knives and use the knife as a striker - typically the back of the blade. But this was the perfect size to keep with the pictured BK2. Those familiar with Becker knifes know that the thick stucco they coat the blades with doesn't allow a spark off the spine. However, the BK2 and some other Becker models have a small half-round curvature next to the blade's edge which IS sharp enough to spark. This rod fits that slot perfectly and sparks well from it. That's what I was hoping for when I bought it. Alas, I still ended up stripping the blade of the BK2 so that it would cut wood finer, better. For Becker owners who don't want to go through that hassle, this is the fire steel for you. The built-in grip also makes it a little safer when striking so close to the knife's edge. And being that it fits the slot so well, you're getting more surface contact for more sparks than what you could get off the straight back edge of the blade. If the knife was made by...

Highland Pete: I ordered this Ferro Rod along with a Husqvarna 13" hatchet, so I only paid $5.97 for it and no shipping fees. I've never used a Ferro Rod before and all I can say is that this thing works great. I rubbed some vaseline on a cotton ball and struck the rod 2 or 3 times with the side of the striker and presto! I had a fire going. The rod may be a little smaller than some experienced users may prefer, but it packs nicely into my backpack and does what it is supposed to do. It appears to be solidly put together. The striker is nice and thick and very easy to hold onto as is the little plastic handle on the Ferro Rod. For six bucks how can you go wrong? If you prefer a larger rod look at the SCHFS2. It is the larger version of this one. I think I may look into purchasing a knife sheath with a ferro rod holder on it and keep my knife and the rod together in one package.

ChrisL: Not as big as I thought and the striking plate is sort of useless so that went in the trash immediately. This can be sparked with basically anything metal after the thin outer coating is removed from the metal.

A year later and this has worked perfectly every time I have used it. Definitely will recommend to friends.
