Santiago González Chávez: This book is very well written and of deep research. The perspective of a very renown psychiatrist is of an invaluable nature, sharing the workings of the complex psychiatric establishment from the inside.
Also valuable is the lesson regarding the relationship between big corporations and big government. When incentives for those organizations are aligned, the general population tends to suffer. Regulation might help but the solution to this kinds of problems lies within a profound change in our collective relationship with "authority".
This book is one of the best defences for authentic human diversity and a warning against a pseudoscientific-backed totalitarianism. It is an inspiring read for saving normal en keeping sanity at this times of widespread medicalization of everyday life.

Mary R. Kolk: I teach classes on my research on Big Pharma. The classes are "Big Pharma: Pulling Back the Curtain on the Business of Healthcare". This book has been invaluable to my research on Big Pharma. People in my classes are astonished to find out what goes on behind that curtain. Dr. Allen Frances is one of my newest heroes!! He tells it like it is.
This country spends more on prescription medicine than any other country. Direct to consumer TV ads are out of control. Showing only how wonderful you will feel after you take their drug while the rapid voice over gives non-stop difficult to grasp and even more difficult for any non-medical person to understand side effects of these drugs. We take something as simple as shyness and turn it into mental illness.
Dr. Allen reports:

Roger Deacon: Despite the rise of Dumbold Chump and the presumed mental instability of any supporter, it is heartening to think that the country that once was a light to the rest of the world at so many levels yet now none, has a few people still aware of the blinding idiocy in Psychiatry. Bring back the leach, it was so much safer. Schizophrenics living on the streets in India are healthier than those in USless America.

Jojo: Sure - some may call it a late awakening of one of the forethinkers in psychiatric diagnosis. On the other hand - who better to stand up now and question some steps taken?
For those who work in the area of counseling, therapy and psychiatric care: You may feel that finally some old shrink jumped out of his bath tub yelling "Eureka! Eureka!" and in true Archimedes style starts to solve the troubles people have puzzled over for a long time. In a way, yes, I think this is how this book may be read (although I don't think it is what the author really thought). It stresses, once more, that the border between healthy and sick in psychiatric diagnosis is fluid. It stresses that we should go back to the good old days of actually talking to our clients or patients before diagnosing them.
I call this book a wake up call. A wake up call for all those dedicated to helping people and moving away from treating patients. We know so very, very little about the "chemistry" involved in mental health issues, we should stop treating patients and start helping people. Maybe this book will raise just a few more to stand up to their believes. Because - let's be frank - those who don't want...

Dennis B. Mulcare: First, I highly regard Dr. Frances’ efforts in composing this book, as he is thereby confronting a lot of vested interests. His “Insider’s Revolt”, per the book’s subtitle, is quite evident and most appreciated. Moreover, I believe that his efforts epitomize the highest ideals and ethical standards of the medical profession. As he states, he is concerned not only with saving normal, but also with salvaging the credibility/efficacy of psychiatric medical practice in a broader sense (e.g., including general practitioners). From my perspective, however, I also believe that he could have developed and presented his case more effectively. He would seem to have marshaled his major points rather well, but he could have organized them more coherently and supported them with greater depth.
Quite generally, Dr. Frances notes that “we have not figured out ways of translating basic science into clinical psychiatry...The expectation that there would be a simple...neurotransmitter...explanation for any mental disorder turned out to be naive and illusory” (p. 10). Accordingly, it would have been desirable for the book to include some ample treatment of neuronal/synaptic...
