Jacki Robert: I don't have a lot of books, but during a recent trip to Alaska, one of the tour guides read a poem/story from Robert Service about Sam McGee. We were passing the lake that was talked about in the poem. I just had to have the poem. The book has a lot of his works. I love his style. The book itself is well made. As said, I don't have a lot of books, but this one was absolutely essential, particularly with the recent trip.

JMH:
If you enjoy neo-Kiplingesque poetry, Service is your man. From 'The Shooting of Dan McGrew' to 'The Cremation of Sam McGee' via the humour of 'Bessie's Boil' and 'Madame la Marquise', you'll be entertained, and also moved by the poetry inspired by his years driving an ambulance during WW1. Various verses exploring the contrast between his atheism and occasionally unwilling reverence are also thought-provoking.
My Father Christmas passed away
When I was barely seven.
At twenty-one, alack-a-day,
I lost my hope of heaven.
Yet not in either lies the curse:
The hell of it's because
I don't know which loss hurt the worse --
My God or Santa Claus.

asimov: The writings of Robert Service are classic. What's not to like? His poems have rhyme and meter. They're fun to read, silently or aloud. Some of them have been made into excellent YouTube videos. No American education can be considered complete without an introduction to the works of Robert Service.

Richard A Pope: A lifetime's collection of Robert Service's poems - remembered mostly for his tales of the Yukon, his life and prolific writings spanned both world wars and global wanderings, film scripts and Hollywood...yet he remained a private, insightful and humane man to the end. A joy to read.

CFH, South Jordan, UT: I grew up seeing this book on my parents book shelf and recently inherited this little treasure. This isn’t the kind of book that I read in a few days--it is 735 pages of poetry after all. I have been working on it for over a year, a few poems at a time. This collection includes six books: The Spell of the Yukon; Ballads of a Cheechako; Rhymes of a Rolling Stone; Rhymes of a Red Cross Man; Ballads of a Bohemian; and Bar-Room Ballads. Service’s best known poems--"The Shooting of Dan Mc Grew" and "The Cremation of Sam Mc Gee"--are included, of course. But my favorites are in Ballads of a Bohemian written just before and during World War I. In this collection, he discourses briefly on the person or experience in his life that prompted him to write each poem. He also disavows being a poet and claims to just write rhymes. True, his rhymes are simple but they portray honest humor, pathos and spirituality in clear and straightforward language.

Edward Walden: Robert Service's verse have been beloved of us Northerners for generations. The children in Western Canada memorize "The Cremation of Sam McGee" in school. This is a great collection of his work.
