Helen: Every word of Margaret Atwood is a gem. Her writing prose is poetry and her poetry is magic. They are all heartfelt and relevant. I had too many (how can there be too many?) favourites. So many underlined passages. So many aching moments of dreams, reality, fantasy, life, aging. Her choice of words all echoes countless meanings : look up Reft. Use it. Then reuse it after reading hers. And Dearly. We should all become dearly. And how did we lose it in a generation? My grandmother and her sisters were dearly beloved. Not just beloved. My heart is still sore from her climate change poem too. Or plastic revolutions. This is an astonishing collection, to be reread and enjoyed and pondered.

Celine : I don't know, I'm kind of disappointed by this book.
Maybe because I expected something totally different but I honestly don't like a single poem in this book. But it might just be a matter of taste

Elsie: The poems in this book are very poignant and I’m keeping it for my granddaughter to read. The delivery of the book was on time and it is in excellent condition.

maik-arnold: I have been eagerly awaiting this book with great anticipation but, to put it bluntly, my expectations were higher. Nevertheless, it is a great poetry collection and I enjoyed reading it. Atwoods down-to-earth and plain (but not simplifying) language draws the reader into the book and its stories that need to be listened to. I very much liked the assortment of the poems in each chapter. The different chapters cover almost all grand narratives of our times: the human condition, sexuality and violence against women and girls, feminism, environment pollution/ climate change, development of language (e.g. gender-specific), aliens, science-fiction and cyborgs, etc. The greatest gift of the author is to create awesome stories deeply engrafted into each of the poems. My favourite poem is "Zombie" which reflects on Rainer Maria Rilke's not very self-explanatory verse "Poetry is the past that breaks out in our hearts." In doing that, she describes the different faces and opportunities that poetry involves: "The hand on your shoulder. The almost-hand: Poetry, coming to claim you." - To book's end is filled with grief about the (almost) forgotten "Dearly", a poem about an...

michm: I loved ‘Dearly’ and found it to be pure magic! I happened to listen to her interview on NPR and pulled in the driveway went in and ordered the book! I do buy poetry books and often I am not caught up in some of the poetry. Atwood writes about the mundane and the profound and she catches you in her web of words. She has a beautiful mind and soul!

Lynnea Fitzgerald: Just here to celebrate her first book of poems in over a decade, and to tell everyone that they need to buy it because it’s incredible just like everything else she writes !

Pamela Scott: Atwood is one of my favourite writers, yet I’ve never read any of her poetry. I’m glad I have now rectified this serious oversight and have now added her earlier collection to my TBR list. The language and style of the poems in Dearly is very different from her fiction, at least to me anyway so it felt like discovering a brand new voice I’d never read before. The themes are far-ranging diverse and include some themes Atwood explores in her fiction. Dearly is a treat and I loved everything about it. The best poems are Ghost Cat, Songs for Murdered Sisters, Zombie, Plasticine Suite and Blackberries.

Browner: The artist, gently aging, looks back on her life so far and what does she see? Memories mostly, both precious and painful, of the small moments and the big events that have shaped her existence. Departing from the narrative formats by which most readers are likely to know her work, she chooses to express her reminiscences and messages through poetry. That turns out to be the perfect vehicle for the concise and introspective nature of the whole endeavor, even if it requires a little more effort from those of us who are unaccustomed to the genre.

In Dearly, Margaret Atwood offers more than five dozen (depending on how you choose to count some of the stanzas) short poems on subjects such as the tribulations of getting older and the pain of memory loss in loved ones, changes in our natural world, gender roles, animal rights, and heartbreaking acts of violence. These are clearly topics the author is passionate about and she brings a forceful and thoughtful approach to addressing them all, which is exactly what you would expect from one of our greatest living writers. What I did not expect was to be so moved by her poetry instead of by the more familiar channel...
