James - Reader of Books: Short Review: Wonderful little book. Used it consistently while in Rome. Carried it in my back pocket until the last day when it fell out and I lost it while riding a bike on the super bumpy streets of Rome. The book is well worth the money!!!! I even saved an additional 15 euro by using Rick Steve's in a promo code for 2 tours I booked, so I actually saved money with this book.
SUGGESTIONS:
Suggestions for a FUN VACATION. (I just got back yesterday.)
1) Read this book at least a few weeks before you go. It will give you a good base knowledge of what you can see and do.
2) There are tons of things to see in Rome, so plan your days / schedules. Plan for sight seeing, and some for rest and relaxation. You will need it, maybe due to jet-lag and just wanting some rest. Plus, without stopping I could have missed the beauty of the culture - its people and how wonderful they are in so many ways.
3) Know what you want to see and plan accordingly. Make a priority list of things you must see and hit those first so that if there are delays/obstacles you can have time to try to see them again if necessary.
4) Find reputable Tour guides/companies. This is not a plug...

Summerroll: Rick Steves is one of the most popular series of guides to travel. We were in Rome for 4 days this summer, and used the book as a quick reference guide. The organization of the book is much like the other guides. It is about 4.5 by 6 inches, 230 pages or so. The first pages of introduction gives a synopsis of the major tourist areas: Vatican City, North Rome, Pantheon, Trastevere, Ancient Rome, Pilgrim's Rome, South Rome, and Termini. The Daily Reminder gives a succinct overview of special hours for attractions on different days of the week. On Sundays, for instance, the Vatican Museums are closed. Many sights are closed on Mondays, including the Capitolini Museum, the Borghese Gallery, Ostia Antica, etc. The guide also lists major sights with its rating of importance: those with three triangles, likes the Colosseum, the Forum, the Vatican, and the Borghese Galleries, are rated three triangles for "Don't Miss."
The back of the book includes a detailed map of Rome with Metro stops. Romans rely less on the underground than on above-ground trams and buses. One of the huge short-comings of the guidebook is the lack of a bus map and schedule. The buses generally come every 15-25...

Debbie Stephens: I wanted something small that would fit in my purse while we were in Rome recently. This book had tons of information about the sights of Rome. Not only did it give you a brief description and location of the sights, it went more in depth concerning some of the major must sees. We found the information/history given for certain art pieces very helpful in allowing us to enjoy many of the museums. It also contains a pretty good pull-out map of the city.
