Retractable Hand Crank Air Hose Reel by ReelWorks - The Perfect Tool for DIYers

Fuzzy: I have two of these now in my shop. Other than getting the right fittings to make the connections, which would be necessary with any hose reel, they are easy to install. Rather than trying to untangle a kinked or twisted air hose to hang it up at the end of the day, a few turns of the crank and its all done. While the self-retracting hose reels may be preferred by some, my experience with them is less than favorable; these work better for me.

Theron Rose: This appears to be a good reel but almost everyone agrees that it is missing connections. So first of all mine came with a connector. Looks to be a 3/8 female to a 1/4 male. So what’s missing? A 3/8 male 90 degree to 1/4 male. Because I tried a non 90 degree connector and I couldn’t get my hose to connect. Too close to the hose reel.

For people that live and breath air hoses it is probably all very obvious - for me not so much. Three rounds of purchases to get the right connectors to attach a hose
Others have written on what you need - this is what it took for me
To connect the reel I needed
1/4-Inch Female to 3/8-Inch Male NPT - went into the connector in the middle to allow a hose to connect
I used a 1/4" Brass Fittings, Air Hose Fittings, 90 Degree Barstock Street Elbow right angle elbow and adaptors (I purchased these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TV5N367) to connect to that adaptor and then on to this hose: Heavy-Duty Air Hose, 50ft, 3/8-Inch

To connect the Hose reel to my air compressor
I used this
Hybrid Lead-in Air Hose 3/8" x 10' (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085ZW78WW)
And then needed this connector 3/8" FNPT Female V-Style High-Flow Coupler to connect to the hose to attach to my compressor output (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BVVDIG)

The actual unit is well made. The installation came with bolts which require access behind whatever you bolt it to so if you are installing to a wall you will need lag...

Frank: I will be using this to wind 100' of air hose. I originally thought I wanted something that would auto-retract. but this will work better. The compressor and hose will be moved around, so I attached the reel to a large, heavy piece of wood.

You will need to purchase a short hose that will run from your compressor to the reel base: a regular 1/4 male quick connect on one end that connects to the compressor (the typical off-the-shelf compressor for DIY), and a regular 1/4 quick connect female on the other that will connect to the base of the reel.

The fittings on the reel are 3/8 inch. An adapter was included in my purchase for the bottom connection to allow a 1/4 inch hose fitting to attach to the 3/8 fitting at the base of the reel. But you will also have to purchase a 1'4 inch male quick connect fitting for the hose from the compressor to attach to something; the base of the reel is a female connection. If your hose is 3/8 inch, you will not need the adapter included with the reel.

After the hose is wound onto the reel, it will not connect to the base at the hub of the reel if it has a 1/4 inch end. It will be necessary to purchase a 3/8 inch male to 1/4 inch...

Amazon Customer: I researched several hose reels looking for a self retracting 100 foot reel. There aren't many on the market that have good reviews and are durable for the long term. They're also very expensive. This unit was attractive because of the low price and solid steel construction. Upon unboxing I was impressed with it's build quality. Keep in mind, this is only the reel. The leader hose, connectors, and most adapters are not included. The inlet and outlets of the reel are 3/8" threads which is more for a shop or industrial applications. One 3/8" F to 1/4" M adapter is included for the inlet. WIth a 1/4" double female adapter on top of that, you can hook a leader hose directly to the inlet, or you could add a quick disconnect. For the outlet you'll need to buy a 3/8" male to 1/4" female adapter to screw in the quick disconnect for the outlet hose. Most 3/8" air hoses use 1/4" threads on the ends which means you'll need adapters. Once I got everything purchased, assembled, and mounted I pressurized it and it didn't leak. Extremely smooth motion and manual rewind. Super heavy duty. Has a lock to keep hose reeled up. Good buy.

Michael Barrett: This is a very heavy-duty steel reel with very sturdy fittings so if you are hanging it up, be aware that it is heavy. I read the product page that said the fittings were 1/4 inch so I thought I'd be alright with my 1/4 inch NPT hoses and the short hose I needed to buy to connect to my compressor. Wrong. The video clearly states that the connectors are 3/8 inch NPT and I had to scramble around to find the necessary coupler/adapters.

KEN MELDRUM: This is a good hose reel. However, the fitting to connect the hose to it is not adequate for the job. The reel comes with a 3/8 male to 1/4 male fitting, it needs to be a 3/8 male to 1/4 female fitting because air hoses come with male fittings. To make it work I have to make the connection so long the thin hose I'm using sticks way out from the reel. I don't have access to proper crimping tools to cut and reattach fittings. This part was very inconvenient.
