carolintallahassee: I highly recommend this interesting mystery series. The two male protagonists are men of valor, integrity, and while Haze is happily married, Captain Redmond is trying to court the local vicar's daughter, Katherine. This was a good murder mystery, why was a young married woman murdered, pretty, artistic, and very much loved by her husband, who wanted her dead? It is up to Haze and Redmond to find out.
I highly recommend it.

TRIMONTIUM: Redmond and Haze are an odd couple who in normal circumstances would not have passed the time of day. But these are not normal circumstances and they make a nicely balanced pair of sleuths. Who gains from the deaths is clear early on but can the intrepid pair establish the links in the chain? I am really enjoying the little cast of key characters emerge and look forward to following their progress.

Davy Brody, owner of the Red Stag in Birch Hill, gets the shock of his life when he is returning home from Brentwood – where he had purchased spirits for his establishment. He always gets the shivers when he passes that old abandoned abbey. There is just something unnerving about it. Now, he’s discovered the body of a beautiful young woman who just looks as if she lay down and went to sleep. Terrified, he races away to the Red Stag so he can send his stable hand, Matty, to inform Constable Haze about the body.
Daniel Haze and his wife Sarah have just returned home from a second honeymoon in Scotland. They needed that time together to mend their broken marriage – and now he is ready to get back to work. He’s missed his new friend, Jason Redmond, and is delighted to see the American surgeon walking up to the location of the body. They’ve already solved one case together, so maybe they can work together on a second.
There doesn’t appear to be any wounds on the body nor any outward signs of struggle. Everything appears to be death by natural causes – until Jason asks if he can examine the body where he discovers she was...

John Michael: This second mystery in the Redmond and Haze Series continues to develop the main characters and reveals more and more as you progress through the book. It introduces more twists and turns as the characters glean more clues and information and sees the development of their detective skills. I am so intrigued with the way the mystery unfolds and it is not like any other mystery/detective novels that I have read. I love the historical settings in the series of these books and the attention to the details of descriptions of the era. Thoroughly recommend the book but you need to read Book 1 in the series first. I have ordered the next novels in the series that are currently available.

Believed to have been poisoned after Captain Redmond smells cyanide on her breath, but with no apparent motive for her murder, Inspector Haze begins questioning Elizabeth Barrett’s friends and relatives only to discover that although loved by her husband, she wasn’t the embodiment of a proper, submissive wife.
Set in 1866 in the rural community of Birch Hill, the main theme of the story follows the investigation into the murder of beautiful Elizabeth Barrett an unconventional woman with an artistic nature Woven into the solving of the murder are subplots like Captain Redmond’s romantic pursuit of a local minister's daughter Katherine Talbot, the ongoing search for Micah Donovan's sister, as well as Constable Haze and his wife’s continued rejuvenation of their marriage after the death of their son Felix.
In a period when propriety, social customs, class segregation and prejudice were the norm, the plot heats up with an adulterous affair, a homosexual tutor, and a...
