James Abner: This book has the information that I needed.
It could contain a little bit more information in all of the areas addressed, but it filled the need of which I purchased it for.

mark: I have a project Ford 8.8 rear end. Need to rebuild it and bought this book to help provide direction. Its got alot of good pictures and the information is pretty comprehensive. But.... like any manual I always want more information than is usually provided.
Still a good guide to the 8.8 and it does have the Ford 9 inch rear end information provided.

Daniel F: The author, Joe Palazzolo, shows how to rebuild one of the most complex components of an automobile, the differential, using the clearest photographs that I have seen in a how-to car book.

davekfrommd: It's a very nice book, but isn't a how to book, at least not for a shade tree (amateur) mechanic. Excellent coverage/discussion of Ford rear differentials (spotter's guide) but you simply can't rebuild a Ford 9" rear diff based on this book. Yes you get tips and pictures, but unfortunately the disassembly and assembly was done at a commercial shop that specializes in drive trains. Nice pics, but that shop is optimized with all the tools of a high end shop that specializes in drive trains. And so the assembly isn't done from the perspective of work bench, hand tools, hammer, punch, no hydraulic press, etc. Further you don't get critical information, for example, on how to set carrier bearing preload. Nor does the book cover old style crush washers used to set pinion preload. Some of the written procedures lack explicit detail, saying for example, torque to the specified spec. Not a bad book mind you, but this cannot be your only resource if you are changing out the ring and pinion, & replacing bearings, on your Ford 9" rear. I also believe there's an editorial mistake but I've not been able to contact the author to confirm.

MTE: Lots of great information related to Ford 9 Inch rear ends. YouTube university will only get you so far and many videos often skip steps or skip explaining why you are doing certain things. This book helped fill in a lot of gaps and I felt much more confident diving into the rear differential on my 1979 F-150. I find it funny that I wouldn't bat an eye tearing down an engine whether it is in this truck, another or even my Harley, but playing around with a differential? For some reason I had it stuck in my head that it is so complicated it must be a dark art to get them set up properly. With the right tools, this book, some patience and a willingness to try you'll be adjusting back lash, gear pattern and pre-load in no time!
