VP Renovations: Was looking for a ASME certified manual for my mid 90's 4L60E but had trouble finding one so decided to give this book a try. Mind, I've never rebuilt an entire transmission by myself. Removed and installed plenty, but never tore one down and rebuilt it. This book was EXACTLY I needed. Followed the instructions (with pics) and once installed (with a few upgrades as well) my transmission is good to go. Pulled trailers loaded down with it even and no issues. Rebuild all the way down to the bottom pistons up to the oil pump. All internals new and/or upgraded from sunshell to planetary gear set (went with 5 pinion as opposed to factory 4), clutches, steels etc. This book is absolutely amazing. Thank you to the writer!

Dave: As a guide, this is a great book full of history, improvements and in depth information about the GM TH700-R4, 4L60 and 4L60E as well as knowledge toward the heavy duty unit upgrades. As a manual, as I think some expected according to reviews I read, this is not, get the ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service Group) 4L60E Manual and watch videos if you need the walk-through as I did. The tips and methods Cliff Ruggles shares with close up pictures and explanations that guide you along the rebuild process as outlined by ATSG are excellent. I consider myself a good mechanic that can replace parts if I know what is wrong, most DIY mechanics do that, rebuilding a transmission is not easy- period. If you find yourself rebuilding one read this book before doing the job, keep it handy while doing the job it is a great guide as the title states. I did not read the Swapper's portion, but skimmed through it and there's good information, images and charts there as well. Enjoy, hope it helps.

James I. Moffett: I am not an "automatic" guy as I prefer to shift my transmissions if given the choice. As an old school Pontiac enthusiast, I can't help to see the advantage of upgrading the factory automatics to the more modern transmissions with the overdrive capabilities, and will should I get a car with the older type automatic transmission. Of course there is nothing wrong with the factory stuff and many will keep if restoring their cars or if upgrade cost is a problem, but if you are not going for originality and want to take advantage of a late model overdrive swap to increase performance and drop your engine's cruising RPM's, then this book is for you. This book is a complete manual that gives you all the info you could ever want in making your upgrade selection. It is a step by step guide to identification, disassembly, modification, and reassembly if you can work on a transmission - I can't and prefer to let the experts do it, but I can pull and reinstall it. This book makes me aware of what to look for in transmissions and to which parts & pieces should be checked or replaced with better upgrades. The book also provides a step by step removal and installation of a TH-350 to the...

zcarbill: I purchased this book to assist in rebuilding a GM 4L60E transmission, my very first transmission overhaul job. It has a lot of good color photos of most of the parts and assemblies, and I did find this book helpful on occasions but sometimes it was sorely lacking in important information. It did not have an exploded view diagram of the transmission, did not include torque specifications for any of the many bolts in this transmission, or what the fluid capacity was (this is rather important information to know after you finish the rebuild and have the transmission installed in the car). It also did not give a list of common failures and their causes and cures for this transmission, which would be very helpful in diagnosing why the transmission failed in the first place.
There were also several other instances where important steps or information were omitted or overooked. For instance, where the author talks about re-installing the servo assembly into the side of the case, he merely says "The servo assembly should be installed as a unit. Use plenty of Trans-Gel on the outer O-rings." He does not mention that several of the parts of this assembly can be assembled in more...
