rpm: You'd better hope that just about the time you finish whatever project with a tool of this sort, that that's not the same time a predator wanders into camp, because at that point you won't have enough strength left to fight off a gnat. That said, once I inspected and corrected a flawed vein on the pilot screw (another reviewer mentioned the same), I decided to keep it and to give it a good rating. I just like the theory of such a tool, which makes me smile, whether it works all that well or not. It's in my bug-out kit.

Warmongerel: I've only used it for a couple of test joints, but it seems to work just fine. Seems pretty sturdy, so it should last a while.

DDGVET4: This is a great tool if you don't have access to electricity and you have lots of time.
The drill is extremely sharp. I used it to make a rocket stove out of a log and also used the dowel maker to make a handle for the drill. The leather wrap for covering the drill portion of the tool so you can hold the drill like a handle while making dowels needs to be made of thicker leather. The drill was so sharp it began to cut through the leather even though all I was doing was holding it with my hand while driving the dowel maker over a small wooden limb to make the handle for the drill.

cccccc: Let’s start with the BAD: The lead screw was very dull at the tip. That was a MAJOR problem and I noticed it immediately. I grabbed a scrap pine 2x4 and, as suspected, it had a hard time pulling the bit through the wood. Even with lots of downward pressure. I was prepared to return it, but since I have an auger file I thought it would be good practice to repair it. Repairing the lead screw tip is not exactly easy, but I was able to pull it off (barely). After that it pulled through the pine fine. I also did a test in some dried cherry and no problems. The actual threads didn’t look so great – one bent spot and a few chips. But at $20 and a camping trip right around the corner I decided it was functional. Those chips will get worse with time, but it will take quite a while before this thing won’t cut anymore. There were some serious burrs on the cutting edges and, again using my auger file, I cleaned them up and gave a couple swipes on the edges themselves to get them sharper. They were already decently sharp, but I just figured, since I was already working on it, why not.

The GOOD: After the fixes of what I would otherwise consider a defective reject, it worked...
