The Prime-Line GD 52238 Torsion Spring Winding Rods are the only tools recommended for adjusting or replacing garage door tension springs. These 1/2" diameter x 16" long round steel rods are designed for maximum sturdiness, build quality, and overall satisfaction. With a pack of two, they are the best choice for garage door springs and wires.Darren Hickie: These are just simple metal bars with removable plastic end caps. They work as described and fit the winding end caps of torsion springs.

Jr.: When it comes to using the right tools for the job then this is definitely the tools you need for winding garage door torsion springs. One thing worth mentioning though is these rods are slippery! It is an absolute must (for me) to wear gripped work gloves when winding the torsion springs because the last thing you want is for these rods to slip off your hands at high torque!
As for cost, some folks would argue that it’s cheaper to buy a half inch thick by 36-inch long metal bar or even a rebar from your local hardware store and cut it in half. These winding rods cost me under $14. A rebar or a 36-in metal bar from my local hardware store cost between $8-$11. The bar itself might be cheaper but by the time you factor in fuel, drive time and effort cutting the “cheaper” material, it isn’t as cost effective as it may seem.

Michael McManus: These spring winding rods are exactly what I needed, nothing fancy. They fit perfectly in the winding holes - a fraction smaller then the hole they go into, so there leaves no doubt they bottom out with each turn. Just make certain you stand off to the side should something slip and take your time.

Gerald: DISCLAIMER: If you are not handy and are not physically strong, you should hire a professional to replace torsion springs, as accidents can happen and result in serious injuries and/or death.
I initially was hesitant in buying this product as the Youtube videos said 18" tension rods, but this was 16". Since I was not able to find the 18" rods at local stores (and unwilling to pay that much, nor hire a professional), I chose to chance it and bought it. I only did this because I'm quite a strong and handy person - even then, after using the rods to release the tension from the torsion rods, I felt like I had a good arm workout! If you choose to buy this, always be very careful and follow the manufacturer's instructions!

Pragmatic: Purchased and used these bars from Amazon to replace a 25-year-old pair of springs where one spring broke.
It's best to replace both springs as a matched set when that happens. Matched springs sets will last longer work better than unmatched sets.
Replacement of these springs "is a piece of cake" and is NOT dangerous IF you follow correct procedures and use the correct tools - including these winding bars. If you are unfamiliar with overhead door technology and theory, and/or the replacement procedures, there are numerous excellent videos on line. Review the procedures while you are waiting for your winding bars and replacement springs to be delivered.
Wear eye protection and don't work or place yourself in the arc of the winding cone when tensioning or releasing tension on springs.. Work deliberately and carefully - don't rush. You can complete this job in no more than one hour max. Painting a single paint stripe along the length of the new spring will help you keep track on the number of turns you've placed while tensioning the springs.
If you live in a nanny state where they discourage selling you these springs - then buy them on-line. The big box...
