Heather: I've spent a lot of money on other brand names and expensive pencils that constantly break, these are AMAZING! I hope they don't change the quality they are my go-to pencils now. If you're older and remember Laurentian pencils these are pretty darn close!

Dr Betty SchuelerDr Betty Schueler: I was lucky enough to be looking at colored pencils when I saw that this set was on sale for about $6. I don't need mor pencils but I couldn't resist 24 pencils for $6 on the off chance they might be decent pencils. I'm forever running low, on greens and blues, so I figured I had little to lose with purchasing this set.

It turns out it is a decent set of pencils--especially for youngsters and beginning colorists. It has a thick, soft core, which isn't easy to break, as I found out when I knocked three of them onto the hard floor. They have a round barrel which I had no problems holding even with my wonky hands.

The pencils come pre-sharpened but they don't really have a fine point so you will have to do a little sharpening if you are doing detailed work. They covered areas fairly quickly and my picture shows the depth of color produced using plain copier paper. I used all the colors, included in the set, to color this design.

The best sharpener to use, with pencils like these, is a heavy duty, steel helical blade sharpener for pencils with 8mm diameter. While you can use a hand sharpener, an electrical one will make keeping your points sharp a lot...

NMP11: I have been in the adult coloring community for about 8 years. Prior to that I used Prismacolor pencils for coloring in my own artwork. I am not a professional artist but an experienced colorist and hobby artist. I will say I sat back for years and watched many rave about these pencils, however I did have my doubts. Because I primarily use artist grade pencils (and let me say I am not opposed to budget brands) because I am familiar with them and enjoy the results. I have declined purchasing the Amazon Basics. I do own two budget brand pencils sets, one being Crayola, but if I am being honest I reach for my Prisma and Polychromos on most occasions. I always weigh in factors before buying colored pencil sets. I ask if I will actually really use them, being my artist grade pencils are the ones I reach for time and time again. I did not feel that I would use them often, and did not want a wasted pencil set sitting around, so this is another factor in why I have put off purchasing them. Amazon Customer: Honestly as a colored pencil artist/teacher I am very impressed by these pencils! They are the first brand I will recommend to my beginner students as they act like much more expensive pencils for much lower costs. Are they equal to name brands that are ten times the cost? No, but they are excellent practice tools to learn shading and blending techniques. The colors blend readily when burnished, as well as less common means such as paint thinners, allowing you to use multiple layers in your art. They can have a slight overly waxy nature and they don’t hold a sharp point for very long but I haven’t found that to be a problem. For the most part the lead has been evenly placed in the middle, so sharpening is sometimes more reliable than more expensive brands. Some colors are not as vibrant or opaque as I would prefer, causing me to use multiple layers of color, but they hold their own as excellent tools to lead into, as well as produce art! Overall, I use them for myself for sketches, doodles, and even some minor and quick art pieces, or for taking on short trips downtown or the park!
