M.T: My house has a lot of flies that's why I bought this. It helps kills the flies as I have kids to protect them. It has bright blue light which attract the flies. These lights are all protected so that kids do not touch. It is plug in. Tubes are easily replaceable.

KS: Works well, for smaller insects. Regular flies don't even get stunned. But very hard to clean. Cup on the base that unscrews is hard to grasp to turn and remove. The cup empties but not completely. The bugs get zapped and dry out a bit, so there's a lot of bug dust as well as bits of bug in the cup. When emptied, the dust flies everywhere. And not all of it comes out of the cup. Also the dust doesn't come off the metal parts of the zapper. With some work and patience, a bent pipe-cleaner is needed to clean the metal of big bits. A nasty/dirty job. If the protective plastic grid could be removed it would make cleaning the zapper so much easier. That being said, it works well on the gnats and small bugs. And comes with an extra bulb, let's see if the zapper works long enough to need that bulb.

Chris8099: To be honest, I have had this a few weeks and have yet to see 1 dead bug or a bug get zapped by this thing, hence it is a fantastic bug repellent. Unfortunately the radius to which it repels is not that great because standing a few feet away I'm still getting bit by things. Comes with an extra bulb. The grates could be bigger so the insects could actually get in to touch the element but now I'm being picky. Great reading light.

RAD: Zappers with a grid small enough to kill fungus gnats or thrips are hard to find. Fungus gnats are particularly exasperating for gardeners because they reproduce very rapidly and are persistent. Zappers meant for mosquitos often do not touch them. This model has a small grid and works really well. The extra bulb is nice. The bulbs do not last long, which is why they provided a spare. I experimented with ordering some standard fluorescents of the same size, which are readily available on Amazon for about $7 and should last a long time. The standard flourescents have normal white flourescent light. To my surprise the lights attract the same number of flying insects regardless. I would not have expected that. That's important because it means the lights can be replaced at a low cost with long-lasting substitutes, plus the blue light effect is optional; you can use a standard fluorescent as a nightlight for example.
