Jan: Its a good food mate if your cats (or dogs) spill the water as it is quite absorbant. It is also machine washable although after five or six times it starts to get a little bit beat up, so better to wash by hand. I would note however, that since my cats sit all over the mat, it does tend to accumulate cat hair which eventually is hard to actually wash off, but it will take over a year of cat sitting.
