Emi Bevacqua: 30th Anniversary Edition with lots of great supplemental adds to a classic. Must read while kids are little though, not so much in it for parents of teens. Also much more of an emphasis on rectifying bad behavior than on getting well-behaved quiet kids to open up.

Junel: With all that is going on in the internet, it is very refreshing to read such a book that is heavily based on evidence/research studies. As a first-time parent, this book is very helpful as it taught me strategies in parenting my child, taking into consideration the holistic approach so we can get their attention and actually being listened. I gave this book 2 stars in my original review (see below) because we felt it made our son even more defiant than he had been before. Feeling super frustrated, yet not willing to give up on some of the concepts in this book, we next read, "The Highly Sensitive Child". That book gave us some valuable insights into why our son often devolves into a fit of rage when we point out his misbehavior, and it also helped us realize that he functions better when he knows we're in control. Armed with a clearer understanding of his inner thought processes, we continued using some of the methods in this book, while skipping over others. For instance, we validate his feelings when they are situationally appropriate; however, we do not allow him to use nasty, hurtful words when expressing his feelings. When he begins to use such words, we ask him to take some time to himself, not as punishment, but as a way to calm down before we talk about what's going on. If he's unwilling to take a break (either with us or alone), then we impose a consequence (usually losing a toy or a privilege). Slowly, he seems to be getting the hang of taking the time to calm down before expressing...
