The temperature dial is continuously variable and once you figure out the right setting you can set it and forget it. You don't need to constantly check to see if it's boiling over when simmering with the lid on. Perfect for the lazy chef.

Big Al: Motherboard to my range is being repaired. This has come to the rescue while I wait. It cooks perfectly. Like other reviewers have mentioned, it does take a while to boil water, but that’s ok - I have another Ovente item that boils water in a snap, the kettle. I use cast iron on this hot plate and it heats beautifully, evenly. It is easy to clean, but if you’re like me and hate streaks and smudges, know that no matter what you clean it with, it will be streaky. I am sure once that manufacturer’s film wears off the streaks will cease. I will use this in the future when the power is out and I am running a generator. For now, I am in total amazement of how well this works!

Archie A. Chipps: I have used this for a while because I didn't want to be one that says all kinds of good things about it, from my first use, and think it looks good, so it must work great. I have used this for 9 months that I know of, while I didn't keep count.
This works great and I use Copper Chef cookware on it. I actually cooked a lot on this, to know what it can and can't do. The only thing I noticed it can't do is boil water on the biggest burner without a lid, because the air cools the water just as much as the burner heats. My kettle I am talking about is a 5.5 quart kettle.
I guess that is the best I can say about it's limits, and maybe you might want a burner to do more than 1700 watts. If you have a lid use it, and you this will be fine. I cooked everything from grilled cheese to a big pot of chili. Recently, I made Chicken Fajitas, while I always cook to evaporate the water and scorch it a little for a better flavor, and that takes longer than I wanted to wait. I didn't want to cook it as high as it goes, so it didn't burn the food until I get use to it.
I bought the stainless steel look, because if I need to keep it clean I didn't want to wear off the paint.

Michael Maersch: I live in an old mid-20th century home that HAS A/C but the ventilation setup leaves A LOT to be desired: My kitchen is on the other side of this 'ranch' home and by the time the cool air gets there... I barely notice. So I needed a solution to cooking outdoors for "summer" months when temperatures are 110°+.
Fortunately, I have several MASSIVE trees in a yard that receives "flood irrigation" so I have plenty of shade outdoors All Day Long; and though IT IS D****ED HOT outside, with this groovy 'hot plate' set up on a table outdoors and I can do WHATEVER cooking activities that would otherwise make my kitchen uncomfortably "warm" for hours-on-end recovering from meal-prep activities.
This 'hot plate' product is well-made. (I DIDN'T JUST open the box and write a review like so many seem to do. I waited to see how well – or not – it actually worked first. I've been using it now for several months.)
The hot plate is stable on any flat, table-like surface.
The temperature controls span smoothly from "warm" to "HOT" as you might want. (I have cooked MASSIVE pots of soup on this thing and have had all the control I might require with various recipes that...

sharon: the only thing I disliked is the dial when in the off position should be straight up and down. If it's on full heat it is straight up and down but turned off its at the 1 o'clock position. this aggravates me for no real reason at all. Anyhow...several reviews said it too so long to boil water. First thing I did was take a 2 qt. pot put in a little more than a qt. of water and hard boil 4 eggs. from the min I took it out of the box til I removed the eggs was about 20 min. that's no slower than a stove. This morning about a half an hour ago I put a 6 qt. pot of beans on about half full and its bubbling away. The body does get quite hot so don't get too close even to the knob. The unit is light weight and easy clean. I'm happy.
