I purchased two other brands last year and neither could do the job. These are extremely high quality and the dogs don't mind being clipped with them.

Asharp1: Two Speed is not an accurate description. I have a single speed unit and bought this one for a higher speed. What I got was "Normal Speed" (as compared to the single speed model) and LOW speed. Still useful but not what I wanted.

LokiamusLokiamus: Nicely boxed and no assembly required! I purchased the Oster originally for shaving my two long-haired cats. One has long-fur which becomes a magnet on the fanny for matted poop around the butt, rear legs and under her tail which requires help in cleaning. The other requires shaving during the summer months as she is long-haired and prone to mats. It’s interesting to note, that after using the Oster for the first time to shave Crystal, she enjoyed not having the extra fur/weight and being cooler. She actually becomes frisky for the week or two following the shave and now sits patiently while you shave her. Crazy, right? Anyway, if I must say so myself, she looks cute with her little lion cut! As for Loki and the poop butt, let’s just say she feels embarrassed by the process. Using the Oster on the cats is the first time I’ve ever shaved anything! I was terrified at first of nicking or shaving too close, but it’s a comfortable fit and was easy enough to handle to get the job done (especially after watching a couple of YouTube videos)! The unit can get warm after long uninterrupted use, but I no longer do both cats back-to-back and I have become quicker & more confident...

Jayhoo Ray: I have a Labradoodle with both fur and hair. When she is clipped close its like he's made out of felt. It's thick.
He also is only 9 months and does not really enjoy the whole clipping experience so much. It tickles. And the buzzing makes him extra curious. So the clippers have to work good and fast.
These are the first ones that have been up to the job. A good balance of cost, durability, and function.
In my limited experience these are best for just plowing through the coat and getting it short- really short. Down to about 1/4-1/2 inch. Effortlessly. Like shearing a sheep- if that was easy.
Trying to use them to "sculpt" or cut his hair not that short- challenging. They just dig in and start mowing.
I bought a #3 skip tooth to try and get a longer cut. That is essentially a blade with a steel guard built in. Getting the longer teeth through his coat was not such an easy experience as the "miracle mow" of the original blade. And #5 skip tooth might be better. A wash and brush out might make the longer blade easier but jeeze...that's a lot of work to get to the cutting.
Don't know about detailed trimming with it. I just use curved blunt tip scissors because its...

Edward E.: So I have 2 dogs; a shiba inu mix and a west highland mix. Normally it costs $60 Each to take my girls to the groomers; $120 for both. So to spend $136 ($145 after tax) on this wasn't that bad since it's at least $120 not including tip or what ever BS up-sell they try to tack on to the bill. I usually take them minimally once a year if not twice, so I'm really saving quite a bit.
Previously I tried using my hooman (pun intended) hair clippers on them and while it does work it takes a Very long time to do, often involves cutting them or nipping them a bit, leaves visible cutting lines on their fur/hair and they don't like the sound of the clippers. Hooman hair clippers can't handle the fine hair/fur that dogs have and often get clogged easily.
So I bit the bullet and bought these expensive dog grooming clippers. With so many other clippers on the market, I decided to go with a well known brand name of Oster as they make hooman hair clippers too. All these other no-name brand clippers really worry me about quality despite the "raving reviews" that are often fake. Trust me, it's an investment to spend $100-$500 on $100 fake reviews from these no-name brand companies....
