R: I purchased this shaver about a year ago to help take care of my cats large mattes. He's old and cat clean himself like he once could. Anyway, I love it! It doesn't cut into his skin like some other shavers on the market. I can get as close to the skin as needed. I purchased this second one as a gift to my sibling who's cat is no longer able to go to the vet for a full shave due to his age and not being able to get sedated. Granted neither of us has used it to shave the entire cat, just bits at a time, so I can't say how it works using the guards. It serves it purpose. Mine is still kicking it like the first time I used it. It holds it's charge for a week when using it roughly 5 minutes a day.

Amazon CustomerAmazon Customer: I was skeptical of this razor because of the price, but I decided to listen to the reviews and gave it a chance. I am SO glad I did!
We have Sylvie, a 23 pound (10.4 kg) monster of a cat who has a LOT of fluffy hair. A lot. Like, conceal your hand inside of his fluff, kind of a lot. His hair is extremely soft, and has clogged every razor that has ever tried to shave it. This razor plowed through his hair like butter and never clogged once! Normally, I don't let his fluff grow to full fluffage, but due to the fact my other razors couldn't do the job anymore, I had no choice. With that said, this razor had a huge job to do, and it did it with minimal effort. He did have a few mats on his chest, and I did have to go a little slower for the mats, but it still chewed through them with no issues.
I didn't use the guards, due to the fact I like to get his hair as short as possible and I am confident I can do it without hurting him, so I can't say if the guards work well. They'll likely never be used by me.
The manual said to apply oil before or after shaving, and since this razor had such a job ahead of it, I chose to apply the oil before and let it run for about 10 - 15 seconds...
