Organic Raisins from Newman's Own, 6 x 1-Ounce Boxes

Bindi VanderielBindi Vanderiel: In the past, I've had Newman's Own raisins in a sealed canister, and they were great. This latest order came in 6 1-oz paper cartons, and were dry, tasteless, and a month past their best-by date (see accompanying picture). I know I could return them, but it isn't worth the time and effort. At the least, could you consider not selling your raisins in such awful packaging? Thanks for your time!

I am a highly informed and very particular food consumer who maintains a very healthy organic diet. I purchase no brand of raisins other than NEWMAN'S OWN ORGANICS RAISINS. In my opinion the producer of NEWMAN'S OWN ORGANICS RAISINS uses no additives (organic or otherwise) to preserve freshness or for any other reason, and the soil in the fields in which the producer grows the grapes for NEWMAN'S OWN ORGANICS RAISINS is very high quality organic soil. In the past, it was my customary practice to purchase organic raisins in bulk on a more or less weekly basis at the RAINBOW COOPERATIVE GROCERY store in San Francisco, California, where I have been purchasing all of my household groceries for the past several years. However, more than one year ago, I quit purchasing those bulk organic raisins because consumption of that product slightly aggravated a personal dietary sensitivity. JohnnyDustwalkr: My son has autism and as such we are careful of everything he eats as some studies show that children with autism may have it due to their body's inability to deal with toxic materials (such as heavy metals or pesticides) as easily as the rest of us.

Grapes are a prime example of pesticide retaining fruit, which is why should always wash grapes with a little detergent and then rinse them thoroughly before eating.

We don't need to worry about giving my boy these raisins though, they are delicious and the tiny extra premium we pay for them is well worth it, even if your son is NT. They come in little boxes though, so once you open the big bag be sure to seal them off so the grapes won't dry up if you don't eat them fast enough.

I made GFCF banana bread with these little guys in it and it was so good! My kid even tried it and finished his half-slice! And he is such a picky eater :) (I had to toast it because he doesn't like the mushy crumbly texture of GF bread, but still).

They're also great as a snack both in terms of yummyness and convenience, after his pool therapy he likes to sit down and eat a box or two in the shade, he even works at his fine motor...

Droon by the loove: The first time I got these raisins from Amazon they were great -- plump, sweet and "smooth," the way raisins should be. The second time, however, the raisins were like old or poorly stored raisins -- more grainy and not nearly as moist. So I give the first batch five stars and the second batch two or three stars. Who knows what you will get. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

Later addition: My third, fourth, and fifth purchases (from a grocery store) were all like the first Amazon purchase -- perfect, absolutely delicious raisins. Then the sixth was lousy again! In frustration I switched to another organic brand. ...And had the same experience: mostly very good, with an occasional bad can. So, in conclusion: I have yet to discover a brand that is ALWAYS reliably great. But Newman's is probably as close as you're going to get. My advice: Support the late, great Paul Newman's charities and buy "his" raisins. Chances are in fact pretty high that you'll love them. I was going to change my rating to five stars, but it seems Amazon won't let me. But consider it changed to 4.75 stars.
