Robert Jay Nelson: works great for me

Discerning consumer: As an M.D. with a Ph.D. in nutrition, I found this book to be absolutely wonderful---science based, with multiple references but written in a way that was a pleasure to read. Lots of good graphics, enough repeats of information to make that information stick with you. This book is a compilation of lots of data that I have read before (or at least some of it) but never seen put together in such an interesting, compelling and meaningful way. It would have been useful to have the authors integrate the data they share a bit more with diets that are recommended as healthiest (the MIND diet and the Mediterranean diet) to encourage folks to follow those diets (with specific additions of foods they mention). The health benefits of those two diets have been researched and reported but could even be enhanced with the information in this book. I am back to purchase copies to send to friends. Great book. Thanks to these authors!!!!!

EmmaEmma: I find myself delving into this book again and again. I've re-introduced green tea into my life, as well as a daily portion of edamame beans as a result of my reading. Small changes, but hopefully going to make a big difference. I do agree with other reviewers in that there is an 'amount' of superfluous information regarding the introductory history of each key cancer fighting food. This I found boring. But the graphs, and meticulous research that have gone into writing each chapter make it a very worthwhile read. There is an interesting graph on page 212 that charts the effect different foods have on the different stages of cancer - from it being carcinogenic potential to being a more advanced form. It was probably worth buying the book for this graph alone. It demonstrates why you have to introduce variety into your diet. Something we are often told but is not often explained. I definitely recommend this book.

Ms. K. Johnston: I found this book at my local library and found it a mine of information about what to eat/what not to eat post-cancer. So, having read some of it had to order my own copy. There is quite a bit of science, which is very informative although a tad scary in the initial chapter, but the authors do not pull their punches. Cancer is a hideous disease and this book is for anyone who has beaten it and is in remission, as I am. Most of my diet pre-cancer diagnosis had been Mediterranean - lots of fish and poultry and very little red meat - and this has continued. The authors recommend drinking red wine in moderation but preferably with food, and this is the norm in Mediterranean countries. They also recommend eating lots of oily fish, plenty of green vegetables (cancer cells particularly hate green vegetables, so that's a spur to eat more greens!) and cutting back on sugar. The book is clearly laid out, plenty of information is given in a clear way, and the authors do not bombard the lay person with scientific jargon.

I would recommend this book wholeheartedly for anyone who has/is going through cancer treatment or is in remission. A must-have for anyone who is reassessing their...

Georges CROCHET: It should be in every family. To prevent cancer from happening and even to help cure it when it is here : I know of 2 cases of peole with cancer who have freed themselves from a cancer. I have met in Spain a female docteur Odile Martinez from Grenada who claims she got rid of her ovarian cancer with chemotherapy together with a complete change of way of life following the advice of Béliveau & Gingras. And she has written a book on her case :" Mis recetas contra el cancer " ( My recipes/prescriptions against cancer ). And I know a man in my own village who was diagnosed a cancer at a very late stage, his oncolog gave him in 2007 a few months to live. Fortunately he came across this book, read it,and along with the chemos changed dramatically his style of livfe and, as a result, I regularly meet him 7 years after. He is reasonably fit. As for the female S^panish doctor, when I met her giving a lecture in Murcia University, she was breastfeeding her newborn baby. She had kept her ovaries. Coming back to the book, it's very clear understandable by nearly everyone well illustrated ...

R. Williams: Overall an excellent book and one that should inspire readers to seek out recipes and details to make the best use of the foods suggested. It is potentially a lifesaver on a mass – public health – scale and yet is highly relevant for any individual concerned to avoid cancer themselves, though no guarantees for individuals.

Good points: Well written, well edited and easy to read like most DK books, type of a good size and printed on high quality paper. A thorough introduction to a field which has been researched almost in secret for some decades. The standard, well known cancer-fighting foods are explained in ample detail with the scientific explanations for those who are interested and understand the chemistry. In particular the detail given to the efficacy of different types of green tea is invaluable – I’ll be buying the more effective varieties in future (and Amazon sell some of them).

However it is not without its limitations. The book is written, like many DK publications, as rather a top-level encyclopaedic introduction, not sufficiently as a practical guide. Only the final 11 pages, Ch 18, attempt to be such a guide. At a rather slim 190 pages there is...

Gert Bo Thorgersen: I ordered this book when it 4 weeks ago was discovered that my wife had breast cancer. This especially for in the book showing her some of the good things to prefer to eat after the operation. But before that I've bought many other books about health and cancer and of course also previous under the education learned about cancer. And concerning my wife's cancer I don't think that it's coursed by previous wrong eating but because of her taking the estrogens pills. Besides by living her in Thailand, and my wife being a Thai, we nearly eat as advised in this and other books.

But concerning the book I must say that it's nice, with the many pictures and tables. And especially I like the many molecule drawing and the graphical drawing showing the reactions, changing's, on the tumours.

But even though I've given the book the highest character there are a few points in the book to which I put my doubt. Or written in another way, which of the books that I've read shall I trust?. For example in this book it's written that cancer needs oxygen, but for example in a book written by Michael J. Gonxales and others: "I have Cancer: What should I Do?", it's written that Albert...

Guy Gervat: It's a shame about this book. There's lots of interesting information in it and as it's published by DK, it's beautifully laid out and with lush photographs. However, if I was the authors' editor, I would suggest that they re-think who their readership is likely to be. This book is targetted at encouraging people to make diet changes to prevent cancer. Supposedly, those readers would also need other books to help them prevent heart problems, diabetes, Alzheimers, strokes, etc. and maybe those diets would not be the same. So, I think that this book either needs to be about eating a diet that optimises prevention of all health problems or is modified to target cancer sufferers, showing them how diet changes can reduce their symptoms and prevent further problems. Since, 1 in 3 people will get cancer that second group should still provide a large enough potential market.

If you have already bought 'Anticancer; a new way of life' you can probably get away without buying this book. The Anticancer book covers the main points of the 'Foods...' book.

PT Cruiser: The feeling of despair and helplessness when a family member or someone close is diagnosed with cancer (or if you're diagnosed yourself) has to be one of the worst feelings in the world. Suddenly your world is filled with doctors, hospitals, oncologists and lots of strange drugs and procedures you've probably never heard of before. The battle begins and you feel like you're sitting on the sidelines, being able to only supply emotional support at a time when you could probably use some yourself. This book is an excellent source of information, in layman's terms, about what cancer is, what makes it grow and how you can eat to help prevent it or give your body what it needs to slow or prevent recurrences when it's already present. It gives you information to discuss with your doctors, about how you can join in the battle.

There is no sure cure yet for cancer and this book doesn't promise one. It's a complex disease that isn't fully understood but there are a lot of things that doctors and researchers do know, many of them about molecules of dietary origin, but the results have been published only in specialized medical journals that most of us don't have access to, or even if...
