Mr Lindsay Hall: Neil Oliver brings the past alive by putting flesh onto the skeletons and relics of the past. He takes you beyond the facts and artefacts of archaeological study, to bring back to life those who have gone before us. In doing so he shines a light into our own inner being about what it is to be alive, and appreciate the life we have ourselves and our place in this world.

Kris Hillenburg: Much of what this book contains is in Oliver's book about the history of the British Isles, but what he does here is shape those ancient discoveries and give them meaning for own modern world. He has the ability to make those discoveries come alive and speak to our current condition. Well done.

W. Bonkosky: I'm using up my yellow high-lighter pen marking memorable passages, insights, explanations, revelations, and thoughts that Mr. Oliver - and certainly the Ancients - share with us. I may even be overloading email friends - impossible to resist sharing such things - with especially illuminating passages from the book, there are ssssoooo MANY!!
Please, if you're at all interested in such things, do yourself - and your like-minded friends - a favor and get this wonderful book.
And, Mr. Oliver, if you read this, I offer, sir, my sincere and humble thanks for this truly revealing and beautifully-written book, and with any luck at all, you're working on another one!

Anthony Patey: Neil Oliver in reflective mood, trowel and measuring tape propped against his study chair.
It may be more accurate to say this is the wisdom of Neil Oliver surmising the wisdom of the ancients, but this is the work of a master, mature scholar and is worth reading not just for its archaeological aspects but the subject’s wider appeal.
Neil’s search is highly sensory, highly evocative and highly intelligent. It stresses our humanity through time and how we are human within the “kingdom of animals”, a fact we have certainly lost sight of.
He writes well, with a neat turn of phrase, and the book is shot through with sharp insights.
To quote the gist of just one of them: “We would understand so much more if we knew and understood the roots of our words” – that shines a light onto anthropological gold seams many of us have been eyeing.
This is an excellent and timely introduction to the anthropological aspect of archaeology – you’ll not find practical hints to excavation here.
Shame Neil claims not to be savvy with maths; seeing some sites through engineers’ eyes would open another enlightening dimension for him. (May I...

monizubby: This book awakened my sense of awe in the way of our ancestors. Neil Oliver writes in a fashion that draws the reader into the past and delivers him through time into the future. A fascinating read
