Piers CrossPiers Cross: I bought this book for my wife 7 years ago. She loved it. And she said to me, “Piers, you need to read this book!”

I'll be honest and admit that I put off reading this book for many years. Why would I want to read this? - I told myself.

Fast forward to this year and during lockdown I started to read the book. I then went back over it and started to take notes.

Wow! What a great and sometimes heart wrenching book. My wife and I have been studying Tantra and Taoist sexual teachings for about 12 years and what I loved is how Naomi Wolfe married these ancient teachings with the science. In the same way that Dr Joe Dispenza has married self-development work with science, Naomi Wolf has done the same here with sexual work and the vagina.

---

I hear what people say about the science being hard to read or that it needs more editing. In certain chapters she brings in a lot of complex ideas but in my opinion I understand it 100% better than when I started so I think that she has done a great job.

Some people have said that the science is suspect. I disagree. Yes, she puts her own opinion in from time to time and states that it is up to each...

Kindle Customer: Some great ideas and worth the read, despite the sensationalized parts which erode story credibility.

The core tenants of Ms. Wolf's book are well worth the read. The lack of inherent safety that so many young women feel today is a powerful and subtle handicap that our daughters, wives, mothers, and girlfriends are forced to resolve generation by generation. Reading this book helped my awareness of this issue, and helped me to be a better man to the women in my life. Even better, Naomi even provides some hope and tangible ideas for male-female relationships when she expressed her idea of the "goddess array". I'm not qualified to judge that idea scientifically, but there is absolutely some truth in there which is well worth more exploration for us all, even if it is (very!) awkward. Bravo for bringing this up, Naomi. Really. Thank you.

However....sigh. Ms. Wolf !! :-) You are so talented, and yet I perceive you have needlessly eroded your own credibilty by sensationalizing what is already a clear and powerful point of view. For example, in your trip to Siera Leone, you observed in detail the common tramas for women in that war-torn land and expressed those as part of...

Paige Ellen: I've read some reviews of this book on Amazon that were written by men who are, it is obvious, deathly afraid of the requirements of the art of intimacy. Some tend to focus on and take personally, one small experiential part of the book, as if it were an affront to be taken personaly as an insult. I find such criticisms indicate a man who is insecure, threatened and afraid of women and their own feminine side. However, NW is quite clear about what kind of touch and behavior by or from men or other women, and the effect those behaviors are likely to have on target or witness of these acts. She goes into what some have called too much detail. Believe me, she could have been FAR more specific and detailed should she have so chosen. One point she does make unequivocally clear from the start is that this book is written about WOMEN, the woman's body, and the effect that those (described in delicious or frightening detail) behaviors and touches are likely have on women. She makes it clear, by saying so, that in certain areas she is writing about women and their over-all situation and that it may well be that men need their own book, their own research about how their bodies...

Louisa: I had never heard of the 'oceanic feeling' before I read this book, but I knew, when I read it, exactly what it meant. The fact that this feeling is reported in a book that is essentially about sex, made a lightbulb turn on in my head – no wonder I had never come across it before, my vagina is the last place I would have looked for it. Naomi describes the oceanic feeling thus:

“[the woman] is in a state of a kind of perfection, in harmony with and in connection with the world……in that state of consciousness, the inner voices that say the woman is not good enough, not beautiful enough, not pleasing enough to others are stilled…..and the sense of….a universal or divine feminine can be accessed. Major creative insights, and powerful work, can emerge after an experience of transcendence of this kind.”

Naomi has written a beautiful Ode to the Vagina in this book which she started to research whilst trying to heal a blockage in her pelvic nerve, (which she had injured years before during a fall down a flight of stairs) where, she discovered there is a mass of neurons and pathways connecting the vagina to the brain. This connection is critically important to a...
