Amazon Customer: It seems that lately I have come across several new authors who have had good stories, but failed to write them well. Thankfully, this was not one of those!
I liked the origin stories of the main characters and the natural progression of the mystery from beginning to it's not so obvious end. I look forward to reading more from this author.

carolintallahassee: Captain Jason Redmond, lately of the United States of America, and of the Union Army, ex-prisoner of Andersonville. The one sided information about Andersonville and its starvation of its prisoners, including Captain Redmond and the orphaned boy he saves, Micah is appalling, what we aren't told is the reason behind the lack of food for everyone, including the Southerners who were being starved to death, not just military personnel, but women, children and the elderly. The Yankee General, Sherman, burned his way through the South, farms, plantations with hundreds, and thousands of acres of food torched, all by his orders to defeat the South, and he wasn't beneath starving the conquered foe! The reason Andersonville had no food was the fault of the Union Army, between the blockades and the deliberate burning of grain silos, and fields ripe for the harvest, many Southerners died of starvation. Being from the Deep South, and seeing the remnant of the home my God fearing Great Great Grandparents built, loved, and toiled to build, is a visual reminder, even today, there are bricks left from what we believe is the main fireplace, and the stories handed down of what really happened, and...

R. Norman: This is a new author to me and I loved the story. Clever plot and great characters, interesting enough that I bought the next book, immediately I finished this one.
There were some historical inconsistencies which were jarring, and the use of American English in a book set in England featuring English characters (except Jason and Micah), also grated. Minor detractions from the overall enjoyment.

Suzie Scully: This detective thriller set in a different time shows how far the legal system has changed and how hard it must have been to challenge those with money & status in society

Ms. G. van der Rol: I enjoyed the contrast between Victorian British society and a couple of Americans who had just survived the Civil War. The characters were well drawn.

B. Rogers: I’m not sure why I waited so long to try this series – other than this author’s other books were time travel and I’m not a fan of that genre. This is, I believe, her first foray into historical mysteries, and I’m so glad she decided to branch out. I believe she hit on a very winning combination when she paired a local English constable with a very reluctant American who has just inherited an English title. I’m so very glad I decided to give the series a try and I’ll definitely be reading the other books in the series.
Captain Jason Redmond is a skilled surgeon who fought for the North during the American civil war. Once he was captured and sent to Andersonville prison, he spent his time doing what he could to help his fellow prisoners. There was little he could do with no medicine, no sanitation, no food, no – well no everything. That time still haunts his dreams and his waking hours, but he knows he has to do his very best for the young boy, Micah, who came into his care in Andersonville. Yes, Micah was in prison at Andersonville and as Micah’s father lay dying, Jason promised him he’d look after Micah. Micah is still too small and too thin for his age...

Lynn: What a great series this is going to be. I love these characters. The mix of American and English characters is brilliant. The mix of classes also works. Thanks for a great read!
