Timothy Silvers: I have been shooting competitively off and on for over 30 years. Several Distinguished Riflemen recommended this book to me. I didn't realize how much I'd learn! Very quickly I learned why that fishtailing wind from behind me caused so many shots left and right that I didn't understand before. I found myself highlighting many things throughout the book and highly recommend this if you do any shooting beyond 300 yards.

autodidact: The book provides comprehensive wind reading information and advice for formal target shooters on established ranges, but most of the information is of little value for shooting under other circumstances when things like wind flags are not available. The book also suffers from much of the discussion’s being incomprehensible to readers who aren’t already involved in the specific sport. No where, for example, could I find terms like “inners,” “magpies,” or “bookends,” defined or explained despite being used frequently. There are many long range rifle shooters who will never visit the type of ranges discussed almost exclusively in the book. I did find the discussions about so-called “mirage” useful, but not much of the rest.

TolkienFan: First, let me say that I have been shooting for a long time. Retired military and civilian competitive rifle shooter. But don't get me wrong, I am not saying that I know a better way. Because I don't...!! What I AM saying is that Linda Miller and Keith Cunningham got it right.

I have just recently started shooting tactical precision. It is a new discipline for me and I realized that I needed some help ... especially with wind. I started researching and through a lot of reading and a lot of luck I found this book. Actually, I started with internet searches and found several articles and books that referenced this book. Because it appeared to be universally accepted, I decided to purchase it ... along with some others. I am sure happy that I did.!! This book is very well done. It is complete... at least as complete as is possible to be with a subject like WIND.! I have read most of the reviews on this book and will only say this..... No, this book is not about shooting "across the course". No, this book is not about "service rifle". No, this book is not about .22 rimfire. No, this book is not about air rifle at short distances. This book is about WIND... And the techniques...

Christopher Ballard: It often frustrates me the number of new shooters who think that the more money that they throw at the sport the better they will become. It's true you need decent kit to do well, but you cannot buy experience and expert tips are often hard to find or not well explained.

I recently went on a wind reading/coaches course that I desperately with I had not, but had just been given this book instead. At a fraction of the price I learned a lot more just skim reading it.

A successful shot will try things in practice, all sorts of different things until they see an improvement.

These things may be seemingly small insignificant acts on their own, but it is these small gems that go together to make the whole.

A very good F Open shot recently stated "You wont get anywhere with a book, you need to get out and practice" and you know he was right 100%

But practice what? This book tells you what in spades, there is something for every "wind affected" discipline, real choice. Maths for the boffins, and jokes and sketches for the rest of us.

Every rifle shot should own this book.

The only down side....a couple of digs at F class. So be it....but we...

Muddler: If you have one book for wind reading, this should be it. Whether your a novice or experienced wind shooter this book has something for you. It covers how to get wind speed and direction from flags, mirage, and natural phenomenon. The book also details methods for recording shots and improving your shooting and thus your wind reading skills. If your not a consistent shooter, you'll never know if the wind caused your bullet to move or if you did.

I don't understand the negative reviews for this book, whatever you shoot, if you want to be accurate you have to read the wind. Fact, can't argue with that. This book tells you how to read the wind. It does not give ballistics data for hundreds of different rounds or tell you what to do with your rim fire. That is not the purpose of the book, the purpose of the book is to instruct you in how to determine wind speed and direction which it does extremely well. There are all kinds of free ballistics programs out there for your specific round.

This book also outlines various strategies for dealing with wind in competition. I am not a competition shooter, but I still found the information interesting.

Unless you have had occasion in the past to be conscious of the wind on a rough sea or a turbulent sky, you probably have paid little attention to it. At worst, it was a mild irritation, like an insect that landed on the back of your neck, which you have chosen to ignore in the knowledge that it will fly off anyway.
