IAMC: There are so many variables involved when dialing in your espresso machine including tamping. I have a Breville and the included tamper is just Ok however like all tampers of the same design, how you use it is very subjective. Some days, you may under or over tamp or tamp on an angle which of course has a direct influence on the shot. So with the addition of this tool, I have added consistency to my technique. I also added using a WDT tool prior to leveling and tamping. Once you have your grind weight dialed in, then WDT, smooth and tamp. The shots are now very consistent and so money well spent!
This tool is well built and heavy (.5 kg!). Has nice chromed / polished surfaces that touch the grinds. There is a shoulder that limits how far the tamping end goes into the portafilter. To set the tamping distance by loosening a lock ring, then turning the tamping end to adjust the tamping distance (you can use the Breville Razor tool as a gauge) and lock it down.
It's the old "I really wish I had bought one of these sooner" results!

Palwinder sangha: This thing is quite a handy tool. I usually wouldn’t tamp very straight without it but since getting it I’ve had nice uniform tamps since the distributor makes it nice and completely flat. It is a surprisingly heavy tool but works well.

Cody: Item has a wonderfully polished finish, produces a even tamp of coffee grounds that undoubtedly improves the extraction process. Nicely machined, solid and aesthetically pleasing. Ultimately, a very functional piece of kit for the Barista Express.

N. Toy: Using this tamper versus the tamper that came with the Breville Barista, made my coffee drinks taste better. I'm thinking the extractions were more even (less channeling?), versus using the traditional (stock) tamper. It took a few times to dial in the level and distribution of the ground coffee beans but this tamper is not only easier to use & distributed the ground coffee better, but the tamp pressure and tamp level was much more uniform, thus, coffee extractions were consistent. Better tasting espresso was the end result!
