Sean: I found this book really good for ideas of composition, which they don't really have many good books about. In my opinion, the essence of photography is composition. So this will help you with that, give you ideas, explain why one thing is good, and that kind of thing.

Mark Sterry-Blunt: Excellent: The first 7 pages describe the author's entry into and journey so far in photography. The lessons start on page 8; by the bottom of page 9 I had found the answer, the reason I bought this book. 159 more such pages to go - can't wait to read each of them.

Tim A: Many books on photography do their best to confuse and make the whole process appear complicated.
This book is the antidote.
Using simple to understand explanations of why and how to take different types of picture with examples to illustrate the concepts, this book has the capacity to greatly improve your pictures.
Add Understanding Composition from the same author and you will have all the tools you need to take great pictures!

Tushar: If you are getting started with photography, and are searching for a good starting guide to the concepts of light, aperture, etc., then, look to make this book your companion. It has some very good explanations of the basic concepts on Exposure, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and others which you would require to focus upon when you get started. This book can help you get a good footing with those areas. May be because I am not a starter, I found this book lagging a few things, that I would have desired it contained. A good book to have otherwise, to add to your photography book collection !
Pros:
1.) The details are explained in simple language, easy for anyone to understand
2.) There are good explanations around lenses, sweet spots, different apertures and their impacts on the image, etc., which can help starters improve their images and gain confidence (I understand how much it helps when there is something which can tell you are not bad, after all !).
3.) Does not have technical details and so makes it easier for novices to use
4.) Good amount of examples provided from the author's travels and workshops on the concepts, also explaining the steps how the image was...

Roger: I purchased this book as I've always been particularly interested with low-light level photography and astrophotography. I noticed almost immediately I could take better photographs or images by bumping down an ISO level with my newly purchased Nikon D5600. I then realized I needed to learn how to use manual mode for manually choosing aperture and shutter speed for optimizing my skills, and shortly later I purchased this recently written book.
PROS
1) Includes at least one really good photo, if not two or three good photos at times, depicting each photo taking scenario described.
2) Many photography taking scenarios described, targeting mainly using Manual mode, as the book's main theme is about using Manual mode instead of Program (Automatic) mode.
3) I enjoy hearing those with experience, describing their personal recommendations based on sound reasoning. (eg. Author prefers using Center-weighted light metering, as it's a technique that has yet failed and has almost always worked. I, myself, was mainly using spot metering up until this recommendation within the book, but I still have a strong preference for spot metering due to my subjects usually causing...

Author Bryan Peterson is an actual professional photographer and an instructor and founder of the Bryan Peterson School of Photography. He teaches you all the ways to achieve proper lighting and exposure for your photography, which is more in depth than you would think. There is so much to learn!!
Right off the bat you find out What is Meant by Exposure? And to answer that, exposure refers to a finished image, and entails the amount of light falling onto photosensitive material such as film or digital card. Then you have to ask yourself, "How much should my exposure be?" to which the author answers.."Your exposure should be correct."
More than exposure, this book goes over many topics such as using wide angle lenses and macro photography. Topics included was also aperture conversions for fixed-lens digital cameras, panning, freezing motion, implying motion with stationary subjects, front and back lighting, the importance of a tripod, and using gray cards...etc. There is just so much covered!! It all flows together.
As a photographer, I can honestly say that this book takes you on an incredible learning trip. One that I was excited...
