Amazon Customer: TL;DR: Major design flaw. Impeller is not designed to properly sit in the motor unit and just grinds unbearably. Taking apart and cleaning (a nuisance at best) will temporarily resolve. Seems impossible to order replacement impellers so if you need to fix it you're SOL unless you want to drop money on a new one, which will inevitably have this issue again.

I've been a fish hobbyist for over a decade, and in that time I've concurrently kept dozens of tanks with different species, sizes, water types (fresh, salt, brackish). I've even worked in the trade before. When I moved into my house a year ago I decided to get a large show tank for the living room, and decided to go with an internal filter because on average they're easier to maintain than external canisters and less ugly than overhanging ones. I've used many different brands for my other tanks, mainly Fluval and Aqueon, but I went with a Marineland for this one because they used to be really good.

Casey: This filter is great. Before, I had Aqua Clear Filter that destroyed my floor and my wall and it was so noisy it was driving everyone crazy. I feel like this is the best item for the price if you don't want to invest in a refugium.
It starts to make a little noise when it gets dirty. I keep it clean (clean up once a week) and my water is perfect without even hearing the thing so I really don't understand people saying it is noisy... I have a 90g reef tank with 7 fishes so except the fact that having it is not perfect because of the aesthetics, it is still a great item for the price.

jonathan olarti: I mostly got those big canister filters, but I was lucky to find this pump. The pros is that great air flow with a diverter, which was great because I have some fish that don’t like a strong current, this goes in the tank so if it leaks, no problem and it’s totally quiet since it’s submerged. Cleaning it, it’s as simple as a twist, the other canisters, there’s a lot to clean, and of course most importantly it keeps my aquarium water crystal clear. The cons for others is probably that it takes some space in your tank, but it does say it’s meant for tanks 75gal+ so in my 75 gal, it doesn’t look too bad. The biggest flaw is that there’s no way to adjust the water flow, like I said before though luckily there’s a diverter. I’m very happy with this filter, hope they address the idea of adjusting the flow other than that, I won’t be able to go to another type of filter besides this one.

AuH20Ag: I like it but was not working clearing or filtering the water tank I have to put back the old water filter other way my fish starts getting so depressed. Water start getting stinky and cloudy been cleaning the cartridge every week. I had to turn this off and turn it on only when water needs to be clear . Basically is just helping to clear water after normal filter can't . Just keep moving the water tank and my fish stress up. That's why I turn it off.

Orlando: I decide to try a cannisters filter after 20 years of different brand hang on filter's for my 90gal tank.....man this unit is amazing soo good compared to my hang3 on filter's...

Cleans really well and is much quieter....only downside is it needs to have the filter changed more often....but it is soon easy and quick less than 1min to do it all!

Don't bother buying the original filters they are ok, buy the 10 pack aftermarket ones they clean better (more changes) and are much cheaper "per" so it's very worth it.

DE: Diatomaceous Earth - can be used with the filter to "polish" water. However, if you follow the directions, it will take HOURS (over 20 hours, at which point I stopped waiting) for the circulating water to clear. In short, add much more than what the directions call for.

NB:
you put the DE in the bucket, NOT the cartridge... the pump moving water through the filter makes the DE build up on the cartridge.

In detail:
this filter can be used as a water "polishing" filter for fresh or salt water. To polish the water (make it crystal clear) diatomaceous earth is used as it has a very fine texture/particle size (similar to powdered sand) and it easy to "incorporate" into the filter while using the "micron cartridge". Follow the directions to install the cartridge, but ignore the part about the amount of DE to add. I haven't experimented to the point of landing on a precise amount, but I'd say, add 3 cups of DE and wait 20 minutes. The water in your bucket should clear quickly. If it does not, add more DE.

Cat Mom: Due to the water level in my turtle's tank, I could not use a normal canister filter without drilling into the glass. This little internal canister is excellent. The only downside is how absolutely insane the outlet pressure is. I had to drill holes in a pvc pipe and make my own little spray rod to disperse the water less aggressively. Without that step, the plants were literally being ripped out of the ground by the pressure of the water. Marineland, if you're reading this comment, I recommend adding a better diffuser to this canister in the future. Otherwise, I couldn't be more pleased.
