The unit seemed to work well (one day on the back porch) until I tried to update/upgrade the software (not the maps). The unit was purchased with software two versions old. Unfortunately the software update broke the unit -- it went into an endless loop. Magellan tech support said it wasn't something a user could fix and since it was still under warranty (only a few days old) it could be returned for repairs/replacement. However, I'd have to pay the cost of shipping the unit to Magellan and they could/would not confirm that I'd get a new rather than a refurbished unit.
Given Amazon.ca excellent return policy/process I'd decide not to take a chance with Magellan and so I returned the unit to Amazon.ca (at no cost to me -- shipping was paid) for a full refund. I'd rate the Amazon return process at five stars!
If anyone decides to purchase this Magellan unit, then call Tech Support "before" updating the unit software in order to get a better download and/or to have the needed files emailed to you.
Since then I have purchased a Garmin 5" nuvi 1450. I have older TomTom and Garmin GPS units as well as a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx. I like...

Floyd Goodrich:
Update 10-22-09....
After using this GPS for four days and 900 mile trip to the San Francisco Bay Area and home to Los Angeles area, I am returning it. It has two major disappointments to me. First is the lane guidance. The lane to exit on is shown on a very small highway sign with extremely small lettering, very hard to read. Traveling at night its tough to see the corresponding actual highway sign to exit on as it may be (and usually is) poorly lit. The second disappointment is the next turn arrow in the top left of the screen, way to small and gives poor information, very confusing at times. Other than those two items I like this Magellan better than all the other GPS's I've owned (Mio, Garmin 200, Garmin 255W, Navigon 2000S, TomTom 130, TomTom Xl340S) The TomTom's lane guidance system showing big green arrows on the lane(s) you should be in is light years ahead of the Magellan's lane guidance IMHO. The next turn arrow on the TomTom makes much more sense than the Magellan. The perfect GPS would be this Magellan 1470 with the lane guidance and next turn arrow and other screen information of the TomTom XL340S. If lane guidance isn't that big a deal to you, I...

Bob:
April 7, 2009- ordered the Magellan 1470 GPS from Amazon. I am anticpating the magellan will be the best GPS I ever owned. I have the IWAY 250c and it works just fine. I wanted to get one that speaks the name of the streets rather than just says "turn onto CT168" or "Turn onto street". So, I took the plunge into the next generation of GPSs.
April 8, 2009- went to website to see if it has shipped and it tells me it hasn't but, it should arrive on the 13th.
April 9, 2009- Received email from Amazon stating it has been shipped. of course fetching tracking from USPS is lame. they only tell you it is in transit. Not as good as UPS where you can track it as it travels from the distribution center to your door. but, the price was better with USPS.
April 11, 2009- What to my surprise but, the mailman was trucking up the walk today with the GPS in hand. You coulda knocked me over with a feather.
I opened the container and found all the parts neatly packaged and I removed the Magellan 1470 from the package and charged it up with my dc adapter(it doesn't come with one, I would suggest purchasing one for testing and charging purposes).
After a reasonable time...
