L. Higgins: When Lysa TerKeurst decided to get serious about losing weight and keeping it off, she consulted a nutritionist, was given a food plan, had weekly weigh-ins for accountability, and learned a lot about food choices and portions, but all of that is not what her book, Made to Crave, is really about. TerKeurst uses the weight loss challenge as an opportunity to reexamine her relationship with God; what she learned can be applied to other addictions as well. In her introduction she says, “God made us capable of craving so we’d have an unquenchable desire for more of Him, and Him alone. Nothing changes until we make the choice to redirect our misguided cravings to the only one capable of satisfying them. Getting healthy isn’t just about losing weight. It’s not limited to adjusting our diet and hoping for good physical results. It’s about recalibrating our souls so that we want to change—spiritually, physically, and mentally.”

This book is not going to be right for everyone as it tells of TerKeurst’s personal journey. She addresses the problems she confronts like stress eating, being comfortable with your body regardless of your size, and overindulgence. She ties...

Lynelle: Compelling, heartfelt, emotional, to the point and witty. The author’s writing style draws you in. Her honesty keeps your attention and her witty remarks make you giggle as you blush in recognition.

I came across the author’s books during an online bible course and enjoyed them. She takes the Word and brings it closer to home. It gives clarity and direction in a practical way. I understand the Word better and see where I too can implement the word in my everyday living.

I like her honesty and directness. Her absolute truthfulness on subjects we don’t like to talk about or hear. Made to Crave is no exception. Satisfying your deepest desire with God and not food is a wonderful and beneficial truth everyone should learn. Especially in our Christian living, where we aim to follow God in every part of our lives, is this book essential. The author shows us we can follow Him in our cravings as well and make God the centre of our lives.

Everything we do is based on our mindset. When we change our mindset, we have the victory. Replacing the lie with the truth, we affectively destroy the enemy’s hold over us. We can make a well-informed decision and live a set...

Afia84: As a professional dieter and closet glutton this book spoke to me in profundity about how I had let my stomach rule my life rather than God. Lysa graciously gives insight and tools throughout the book on ways to centre God rather than food as you journey through life. I highly recommend

Musings of a Middle-aged mum: I was recommended Made to Crave by a friend who had started reading it a while ago, and was planning to finish reading it. We decided to read it together - a few chapters each week - and then coming together on a Friday to discuss what we had learned.

The idea that feeling cravings wasn't a 'bad' thing was a new idea to me, but makes sense that these cravings are created by God and should be directed to Him. The book is full of ways to keep God as the centre of your focus, as you build your relationship to him, and weightloss is almost a side effect. Honestly, I did find that I was losing weight as I read the book, with my weight going from 95.3kg to 91.4kg, which is quite an achievement, when it feels like nothing much has changed!

If you are a Christian who is trying to lose weight (or indeed take control of other cravings), there are lots of insights to be found in this book. It is highly recommended.

j'smum: I’ve found this book so inspirational and challenging. I’ve only really considered the spiritual aspect of being overweight in the past year and in that time I’ve struggled with understanding the balance between enjoying God’s good gift of food and gluttony and how to practically do something in God’s strength. This book has really helped me think through these issues. There are really really helpful Biblical principles discussed relating to our food and exercise choices. It is liberating to know that God cares about my weight, it is not a matter of conceit to want to be healthy. I found it very enjoyable to read, I like the way Lysa takes you on her journey, sharing the verses that have challenged and inspired her. She has a very strict diet as that is what she’s found necessary for her but she makes it clear that it is up to each of us to find the healthy eating plan that works for us. What she helps with is finding the inspiration and strength to stick with it. I’ve lost weight many times only to put it back on again. I’m starting this journey again but this time am hopeful I can keep it off as my target is a closer relationship with my Lord and saviour through...

Sandy Farmer: Wow, just wow. This book is something special. Just know that this review will not do this book justice.

When I read self-help books (I categorize anything that makes me work on myself to grow and become a better me as self-help), I'm always faced with whether or not I'm going to put the things I read and learn about into practice in my life. And I've found that working on myself is not easy. I've been on this earth for 26 years and I've developed quite a lot of habits in that time. Habits as we all know can be extremely difficult to break. And while I've been on a journey to a healthier me that has had highs and lows since 2007, I've made progress, lost weight, gotten to a place where all of my numbers (blood sugar, cholesterol, iron, etc) looked great, then gained the weight back plus some, then started the process all over again. I'm not to my goal yet, but this process is never quick, and it's never easy. And food habits that have been developing for several years have been the major cause of me not reaching reaching my goal.

But this book, Made to Crave, was a real eye opener for me. In all of the years of my journey, I've never handed this problem over to God....
