The voltage tester didn’t really work (or maybe I just couldn’t figure it out exactly) but I was able to use the shunt to get the lights back on and identify the dead bulb. It would’ve been five stars if I got the voltage tester to work. Highly recommend.

rllalm: Battery came pre-installed so unit was ready to use right out of the packaging. This unit is replacing an old one that I've misplaced. They are absolutely magical. I had two strands of lights that weren't working this year and I was able to get both sets working in just a few minutes. Very simple to use and well worth the price when you figure what new light strings cost.

Bob P.: I don’t usually leave reviews but was delighted with this purchase. I used this to save a snowman that had a small strand of Christmas lights inside it to illuminate it. The light stand could not be replaced; it had to be fixed. The tool lead me to the faulty bulb. The bulb tester confirmed it was not working and I placed it with a functioning bulb. Unfortunately the strand would still not work. Continuing to use the tool, it lead me to the very next bulb in the strand. I replaced that one and the next and was soooo happy when the light strand lit up! Battery testing tool that came with is also much appreciated.

maui: I was initially amazed how easy it was to locate bad bulbs and fix my string lights. Shortly after repairing two strings of lights, the shunt repair mechanism (trigger that forces voltage/current across the socket shunt) stopped working. I diagnosed the tool as short within the tool, string light came to life after inserting the socket in the tool prior to pulling the trigger. This indicates a short within the tool. The nodes within the tool is suppose to provide a burst of voltage/current across the nodes thereby shorting the built in shunt within the socket and continuity across the string.

I returned the product for replacement because it does actually work when it’s not broken and normally would just replace the entire string of lights. It is a time saver and a great idea.

The instructions were easy to understand the shunt didn’t solve the problem but tracing the line did solve the issue and they are all working

Gnome DePlume: This product is incredibly well-engineered. I love that it has a tool to help remove bulbs by catching the lip of the bulb. This is so much better than breaking your fingernails removing the bulb. I love that it can send a charge thru the set and make the shunts in bulbs begin to operate so the set lights up again and you identify the burned out bulb and replace it. When that method fails you can detect where the break int he current is using a tone as you scan down the line of lights. I ordered and received this in two days and was able to replace bulbs on two strings of lights already. And, my wife just told me that two strings I've put outside have already gone dark, so I have more work cut out for me. I still have plenty of bulbs left from strings gone dark in the past. The incandescent bulbs are usually interchangeable after you pull then from their bases. This model doesn't work on LED's!

The power tester is a nice addition. It was actually better than my current current tester in that it indicates if you are working with 110, 220 or even 440 Volts. I tested it on my 110 and 220 lines and it accurately identified them. It's handy to put this little tool in your...

iceni7: As an electronics engineer I was skeptical about this device. I was wrong! It has worked flawlessly and so far it has recovered all 8 faulty strings I have checked with it. In six cases the primary method, inserting the faulty string section and pulling the trigger, worked and the string came back to life with no other action required. For two of the strings I had to use the secondary method after the primary method did not recover the strings. In this case it requires the user to scan the non-working string with the Lightkeeper using the beeper and you are then instructed to replace the last bulb that 'beeps'. In both cases that procedure also restored the strings back to life. Very simple and effective tool. Note that it is for use on incandescent bulbs only. It will not work with the newer LED light strings.

Robert Partridge: I was able to repair 3 of 5 light sets with minimal effort - an amazing feat! A fourth took a bit longer tracing wires but at least 50% of the set now works. The fifth and shortest set still has me frustrated, despite light by light and wire by wire checking. Oh well, have to remember how quickly and easily 3 sets were repaired!
