Kindle Customer: I'm learning Mandarin voluntarily, entirely by self-study, but I'm quite serious about it. For reference: I'm barely at HSK 1 after several months, and having started with zero knowledge of this language. Here's what I'm finding: you MUST form a mental association with each and every symbol, or your brain won't retain it. So don't expect grinding flashcards to help (and I'm a big flashcard fan). The far more effective tool is reviewing an ever growing list of practice sentences that you copy down from whatever study tool you're using (the Hello Chinese app is a life saver here). By reading through sentences over and over, your mind has to try to work out the logical choice for the word using context, and that's much more helpful than just seeing some random symbol. PATIENCE is VITAL. The sooner you accept that this is one of the hardest languages for English speakers to learn, and that's there's no getting around the fact that it will take MANY YEARS to conquer, the happier you'll be (and I say that as an extremely driven person who likes to do things with dispatch). Now that I've arrived at the HSK 1-ish level, I've found a new tactic is needed: I must start dissecting each and...

Field missionary in Mexico: This guide is not only complete and comprehensive it is easy to use for someone who has only general knowledge about languages. I will not be needing to take the HSK Test, but am delighted to think that if I follow carefully the McNaughton guide I would be eligible to present such a formidable exam. This guide will outlive my own life by far. It is a map for a lifetime reading and writing Chinese.

Shelly Pine: I have a minor in Mandarin. I gained a deeper understanding of Chinese in the first week doing self-study with this book, than throughout my courses in college. My fiance, who is from China, has also been super impressed with my newfound understanding of the language.
This book first explains the radicals of a character and their origins and meanings, and then applies it to the characters. I've made so many mental connections that have helped me to memorize new characters and phrases.
I wish the book would provide more example sentences/ phrases. Also, it would be lovely if there was accompanying online audio so I could simultaneously improve my listening comprehension.

ampm247ampm247: i am in LOVE with this book! ive been including chinese words/letters phrases in my art for a year or so now, i have a few calligraphy books and all the right brushes, etc. i like to add the words from a separate piece of rice paper and in a separate layer in my art. i usually will title my piece by the words ive chosen in chinese, and i was running out of words!
so THIS book has enough in it to keep me happily naming my work for years and years!
its also spectacular for numbers of strokes per character and a nice explanation of each, though i am not using this to learn to read nor write chinese, i suppose over time, i will do just that ~ to a degree.

Amazon Satisfied Customer: A must have book for beginning Mandarin. Includes this list:
1. Pinyin - pronunciation of Chinese words.
2. Meaning of vocabulary words.
3. Shows the proper method of writing each
Chinese characters.
4. Gives other words that has that character.
5. Bonus. Includes:
A. Alphabetical index of all Chinese words used.
B. Chart of traditional radicals. These are root
words. Most Chinese words (root or other
derivative words) are combination
of other words put together to make new
single word.
Note: Mandarin language is full of synonyms, often 3, 4 or 5 synonyms for many words. Tones and context of subject matter are a way to distinguish them. For beginners this is just nightmare. Chinese don't write in pinyin (like road signs, books, product description, etc.) so you will have to learn and memorize words/characters. With patience and practice you will acquire this ability. It does gets easier over time. As each piece of information you learn/memorized helps and clarify the next one.

Andrew Hansen: I am using this book to review written Chinese after many years away from reading, writing, or speaking it. I focus on traditional characters. The listing of each simplified character is accompanied by its traditional version. Unlike other sources, and many older style flash cards, the traditional characters in this publication are clear and large enough to read. And, as my actual flash cards only go to about 1800 characters, this is a good way to add another 550 SINGLE characters. The explanation/meanings given for each of the individual characters is complete and clear. The specific order in which characters are presented is very helpful to differentiating and remembering those characters with similar components, but different pronunciations, tones, and meanings. I definitely recommend this particular publication for the study of Chinese characters.

Eenymo: Brilliant book, im teaching myself Chinese and would find it very hard without this, I use it constantly. Every time I come across a new word I use this book instead of the dictionary to look it up (you can use it as a dictionary too by looking up the pinyin in the index at the back then finding the character by its number, theyre all listed in a numerical system). Then I use the book to show me how to write the character, and it also gives you a few words/phrases which use that newly learned word, so you can start to build up your vocabulary and piece things together in your mind about how the language works. Another thing I use this book for is to actually see the characters more clearly and check I have the right one sometimes. Anyone who's ever looked at any Chinese words in books etc will know sometimes, esp with the more intricate ones, it can be very difficult to see what they actually are with all the small lines etc. So by finding a character in this book I can actually see it bigger (theyre each about the size of the top part of your thumb) to look at it in more detail. So its a multipurpose book for me! Brilliant learning tool,i'd highly recommend it to anyone learning...

wharolinsky: Live this book it's a bible for the language learning on something as hard as chinese, good explanation and many many hanzis that very used, it a shame that just one thousand from the more than 2thousand of all the hanzis are in full description, it make the book feel like a little in a hurry or too bothersome for the authors to complete it, but it's worth it its price of 20 USD and not more than that
