I was intrigued to see Grace Burrowes had written a mystery series, and couldn’t wait to begin. As always, the writing is excellent and the characters are well developed and very relatable. Being a Grace Burrowes series, I was sure there would be a romance – which is a good thing because that is one of my requirements for any book I read. There is – or I guess will be – a romance I’m sure, but it didn’t happen in this book. At the moment, it appears to be a triangle, and that just won’t get it for me. So, if it takes very long for the resolution to the triangle to happen, I’ll just forego the series. Just as an FYI, I have read the book blurbs through book seven, and it doesn’t look like the triangle is resolved at that point. Since I have already purchased book two, I’ll read it, but won’t purchase more until at least book seven or eight. If the triangle is resolved by then, I’ll continue. If not, I’ll stop with the series. That, however, is just one of MY personal things –...

E. Smith: I’ve read almost every Grace Burrowes book and was disappointed to discover this series is written in the first person (which I usually don’t enjoy & refuse to buy). As I had never seen any of her books in first person I did not peruse it first and went ahead and order the complete series. I’m stuck with them now and am slowly making my way through the series.

MarybytheSea: As one would expect from this author this book is well-written but unfortunately lacking in substance. The various tangled relationships are signposted from the beginning although the ending is quite messy. As a whodunnit it is suitable as a way of passing the time with no need for complex thoughts but the romance hardly moves forward which I found frustrating. I have bought all six books and having read the very end of Book 6 I am happy to read them all.

cheryl: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Lady Violet is coming to terms as life as a widow and is beginning to gradually get back to her old self. Violet attending a house party is the first step in achieving her goal. However, also at the house party is Sebastian, now Marquess Dunkeld. They had been good friends in their youth but had drifted apart. There is also a friend called Henri, a French doctor. There is quite a bit of tension and undercurrents at the party and items are missing /stolen. Violet is determined to help when an innocent party is accused. There are secrets revealed for a number of people and the end was a surprise. I’ve already bought the next in the series,

Anne Mammy: I've read nearly all Grace Burrowes regency romance books and really liked them, so I was very interested to see this new departure into mystery stories. I hoped there might be some romance too. Well, I was a bit disappointed. As a mystery it did not really work - it was all rather obvious, and there was very little romance. Yet, I can see there is plenty of scope for the relationship between Violet, St Sevier and Dunkeld to develop further in later books. So, I am busy reading the following book to see whether that fulfils my expectations. Grace's style is pleasant with often unusual humorous similes. So by all means give it a try and let's see how the series unfolds.

Beth T. Irwin: I loved this book so much I promptly came back and bought the rest of the series.
Here's why:
The heroine is acerbic, delightful, insightful and HUMAN. She comes out with the most fabulous observations that have me chortling with glee. Like when she describes another character as "he would have been called a fine figure of a man, meaning he had a prosperous belly , an extra chin, and a nose that would grow more veined and bulbous by the year if he didn't moderate his drinking." Or when she complains, "This tea wouldn't keep a preacher's sweetheart awake through his Easter sermon."
The other characters are just as fascinating in their own ways. And the author exhibits her usual vivid descriptions in describing the way the men smell and feel, the way another woman is as fascinating as a carriage accident, all while trailing red herrings across the main story line so skillfully that I never saw the ending coming. It's complex, it's logical, and it's so delightfully devious that I simply sat there, clutching my book, muttering, "Oh no. She didn't. She got me!" The author led me completely down the proverbial garden path, thinking I knew where the story was going and...oh...

Crazygirl: So first of all, this is the 2nd series of Ms Burrows I've started reading. The first one I started isn't done yet, the Lord Julian mysteries. I liked it so much I looked for more of Ms Burrows books. The unfortunate thing is, by reading thru many reviews of her other books, it appears she writes stories with explicit love scenes included. That is not something I like to read, I wish books could have ratings like movies. Then I wouldn't have too waste time reading all these reviews that stupidly rehash the story. Why do reviewers summarize the story, the summary is already in the description!!!? Review the writing quality and type of content!!!!!
That being said, the reason i bought this series was because one of the reviewers finally actually mentioned that when the h and H finally connect in the final book, it is not a steamy love scene. So yay for me. But it took me sooo long to find a review that gave useful information.
I'm hoping the Lord Julian series keeps to a PG rating as I'm hoping for this series. I will review it at the end.
So far this book is great, Ms Burrows is good with her descriptions and writes very smooth. The words flow beautifully. I...
