TeeMee-Kraftqueen65-Obsessive Reader: As much as I love Raybourn’s other series, "Veronica Speedwell," I’m loath to admit it has taken me this long to pick up any of her other writings. She is beyond masterful as a story teller, and knows how to draw the reader in to the point of complete and utter oblivion to anything other than to the words on the page and the plot at hand, as it unobtrusively unfolds and lures one in deeper and deeper.
That it has taken me this long to start the "Lady Grey Series" is almost an embarrassment and shame on my part! I’m sure part of it is due to my lack of excitement for most Victorian era novels.

I’m also uncertain why it’s taken me so long to recognize that with Raybourn’s writing, rather than telling myself I’m just going to read a bit more to the end of the chapter, that does not work with her unparalleled and unconventional complex, and artfully rich flair for writing. Whereas most authors tie up ends and possibly presents a small segue into the next chapter, Deanna actually sets up a huge transition which keeps you reading far into the next chapter. It makes it neigh in possible to put the book down! It’s not what I would consider a teaser, or even...

Kindle Customer: Silence in the Grave
The first in the Julia Grey Series
It has suspense, sextual chemistry between the lead characters, shocking discoveries & taboos not allowed in that era.
Lady Julia Grey followed what any daughter, wife should be expected in society. She followed the path of a daughter of the March family should do. Get married leaving her siblings, believing she would have independence once she married her childhood friend. Though the marriage she thought she would have didn’t turn out to be what she anticipated. They ended up being roommates instead of man & wife. Julia didn’t know the reason why. She thought she failed her husband when she hadn’t produced an heir. She knew of Edward having a genetic heart ailment that would end his life. But she never thought it would be this early. As a widow Julia must deal with the estate, & follow proper mourning, for her family & societies rules of grieving.
Julia is lost, with grief but not for the reason one expects. She is not sure where she goes from here. Her identity was as Lady Julia Grey, & Edward controlled who she was. Between the décor of the estate, her attire, what should be...

chaos: oh the attention to the victorian detail was awesome! I could imagine the entire scene and all the characters. Wonderful mystery and a bit of rivalry between the main character (Julia) and the lead detective. And her ethics! So wonderful when her own doctor has no time to treat "other" people of religion or color - and has him thrown out of the household and signs up with a non-prejudiced Jewish doctor. A bold move for that time period. And there are many of these bold moves in the story that make Lady Julia my current hero in the literary world. Great story. Went full steam into the 2nd book. Can't wait for author to continue the series. Highly Recommend.

avidreader: An interesting take on the usual murder-mystery, exploring a fairly different theme from the average in this genre. I liked the premise of the forward-thinking, liberal family [the Marches] and their more conventional family member, Lady Julia Grey. I did, however, find some of her carping about how stupid she was [reinforced because this is told in the first person] a bit tiresome, but towards the end of the book her character seemed to gain more definition. Brisbane was certainly enigmatic enough to hold my interest, as were the assorted cast of characters; there were several threads to this murder, some of which landed in dead ends - and although I guessed who the murderer was fairly early on, it was spun out to keep one guessing. The author held my interest, more so because this book ended without a conclusion to the relationship between the main protagonists. For that reason alone I would read the next in the series - but in truth I'm not entirely sure I would have bothered had this book wrapped things up neatly. I shall be interested to see where the writing goes from here because on the whole I liked this story, and I think there is enormous potential here.

Isabelle Klein: Ganz ehrlich:

Caroline: A historical setting, with a delicate attention to detail, Deanna Raybourn has captured a time, a place and a voice that combines into a thoroughly convincing piece of writing. There is wit, mystery and an engaging charm that makes this a most memorable read.

Silent in the Grave is refreshing, featuring a strong convincing leading lady, spirited and outspoken, oozing class and sophistication.

This novel undoubtedly has one of the most engaging opening lines, ever;

"To say I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband's dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor."

setting the tinged unique tone that is consistent throughout the novel.

After this opening line and the death of her husband, Lady Grey's period of mourning is broken by the arrival of Mr Nicholas Brisbane, the dark stranger mentioned within the opening line. As the story unfolds, Brisbane informs Lady Julia that her husband did not die of a heart condition, rather that he suspects murder. This marks the beginning of the duo's quest to solve the crime, taking Lady Julia outside of her snug environment and into darker worlds. The friction,...
